About The Position

The Welder C performs entry to intermediate-level welding, cutting, and fabrication work on steel structures, tugboats, and barges within a shipyard environment. This position is ideal for welders with 1–3 years of experience who can work under the direction of a foreman or senior welder while demonstrating growing independence and leadership. The Welder C performs assigned tasks safely, efficiently, and with attention to detail, occasionally providing basic supervision or assistance to less experienced personnel.

Requirements

  • 1–3 years of welding experience, preferably in a shipyard, industrial, or marine environment.
  • Proficient in SMAW and FCAW welding; basic knowledge of GMAW (MIG) a plus.
  • Ability to read and follow simple blueprints, sketches, and welding symbols.
  • Capable of passing company-administered weld tests.
  • Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Demonstrates initiative and reliability with growing ability to work independently.
  • Basic leadership or supervisory capability with the ability to assist less experienced team members.
  • Familiarity with safe work practices, confined space procedures, and shipyard operations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform welding, cutting, and fitting work on marine vessels including tugboats, barges, and floating equipment under limited supervision.
  • Utilize SMAW (stick) and FCAW (flux-core) welding processes; basic familiarity with GMAW (MIG) preferred.
  • Assist in fitting and fabrication of steel components following blueprints, templates, and verbal instructions.
  • Prepare work areas and materials by grinding, beveling, and cleaning prior to welding.
  • Perform welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions as directed.
  • Conduct basic inspections of welds for defects or irregularities and make necessary corrections.
  • Maintain tools and welding equipment in safe working condition and report any maintenance needs promptly.
  • Work closely with fitters, fabricators, and lead welders to complete assigned projects safely and efficiently.
  • Adhere to company and OSHA safety policies, ensuring proper use of PPE and safe work practices at all times.
  • Support senior welders and foremen in maintaining productivity and meeting project deadlines.
