Welder/Boilermaker

Brown & Root Industrial Services, LLC•La Porte, TX

About The Position

The Welder/Boilermaker lays out, aligns, fits, and welds fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structures and systems such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings, and piping, following blueprints and metallurgy requirements. The role requires proficiency in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW and may require certification for multi-process pipe welding and x-ray-quality welds. Work may involve a range of arc and gas welding processes and welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions. The position is on a long-term maintenance project. The worker selects materials and equipment, plans layouts and assemblies, operates welding tools and equipment, inspects completed welds, handles materials and supplies, and supports installation and other mechanics. Respiratory protection is common and may be required. Workers must pass applicable employer or standard performance tests and perform only procedures for which they are certified. The role works under immediate supervision and typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Physical requirements include standing 50% of the time, walking 20%, and sitting 30%, and lifting and carrying up to 35 pounds. Reaching, handling, and fingering are constant; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling are occasional.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding processes; multi-process pipe welding certification may be required.
  • May require x-ray-quality welding.
  • May require a high school diploma or equivalent, with prior experience in the field or a related area.
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the field.
  • Ability to work within precise accuracy limits and make decisions using measurable criteria.
  • Ability to apply basic mathematics to solve problems.
  • Ability to plan work and select proper tools.
  • Ability to visualize three-dimensional objects from plans and drawings.
  • Ability to compare differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
  • Must pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards and perform only procedures certified in.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Select types and sizes of pipe, materials, and equipment according to specifications.
  • Select equipment and plan layouts, assembly, and welding based on geometry, metal properties, weld shrinkage, and welding techniques.
  • Use applicable welding processes, including gas-metal arc, flux-cored arc, gas-tungsten arc, submerged arc, or shielded metal arc welding.
  • Lay out, position, align, and fit components together in various body positions.
  • Bolt, clamp, tack weld, and weld metal components such as piping systems, plate, pipe, tube, or structural shapes.
  • Set welding-unit cable parameters, including amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by procedure or supervisor.
  • Select and load electrodes or thread consumable electrode wire through a welding gun.
  • Start the power supply and strike an arc to melt and deposit electrode metal and join work-piece edges.
  • Guide the electrode or gun along the weld line while maintaining the required arc length, speed, and movement to achieve specified fusion and bead characteristics.
  • Apply filler rod when needed; clean or degrease joints and work areas; repair damaged parts and fill holes; remove excess or defective weld material, slag, and spatter; preheat work pieces; and cut metal plates or structural shapes as needed.
  • Examine welds for bead size and other specifications.
  • Load, transport, and unload materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist with lifting, positioning, and securing materials and work pieces during installation.
  • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
  • Assist other mechanics as needed.
