About The Position

Under supervision of Welder Foreman or work direction of Welder A Leader, performs electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding in the field according to Detroit Edison Specification 308 Part - A.-on alloy steel piping, tubing, fittings and valves for high pressure, high temperature power and heating plant services. Checks alloy steel to be welded for proper preheated temperatures. Welds dissimilar alloy steel metal objects. Performs flame cutting, heating and welding. Checks blue prints for proper welding requirements. Determines if pieces to be welded are properly fitted for welding. Observes Company rules and regulations covering safety and safe working conditions. Directs work or assigned Welder Chipper.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • be a qualified journeyman Welder A and have successfully completed a company recognized apprenticeship program or must have eight years of verified hands-on experience as a Welder A.
  • Must attain an evaluation of "RECOMMENDED" on the Construction and Skilled Trades test (CAST). (Exception: You will not be required to take the CAST test if you are an incumbent and/or changing location.)
  • Must become Aluminum GTAW qualified (aluminum pipe, 5G position welding qualification) within 90 days of transfer.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and meet Company driving standards and obtain medical card.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders and work from scaffold at heights common to construction work as well as confined spaces.
  • Satisfactory physical examination.
  • Must work shifts as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Performs electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding in accordance with Detroit Edison Specifications 308. Welds pressure containing parts of designated steel alloys including carbon-molybdenum, chromium molybdenum, chromium-nickel-molybdenum, and stainless steel. Examples of these vessels include alloy steel piping, tubing, fittings and valves for power and heating plant service, parts of boilers, turbines, pumps, piping and other high pressure, high temperature vessels.
  • Checks to assure that alloy steel pieces to be welded are properly pre-heated in accordance with Detroit Edison Specification 308. Determines required temperatures by testing preheated sections with a temperature indicating crayon or, occasionally, by reading potentiometer connected to thermocouples.
  • Sets up, regulates and operates electric arc and oxy-acetylene equipment for cutting, heating and welding of metals.
  • Welds dissimilar metal objects; for example, joins carbon steel piping with chromium-nickel-molybdenum. Piping or fittings, or chromium-molybdenum to stainless steel tubing.
  • Reads and understands accepted welding symbols. Checks to determine if proper weld is possible on parts assembled by Pipefitters or Mechanics.
  • Stamps personal identifying number on all finished work to show inspectors who did each particular welding job.
  • Does lesser grade welding work when jobs requiring conformity to Detroit Edison Specifications, Part A are not available or when job schedule requires.
  • Works from precarious places on high scaffolds, swing stagings, ladders and narrow planking, after necessary safety precautions have been taken.
  • Directs work of assigned Welder Chipper. Checks to be certain that Welder Chipper chips and prepares each layer of weld metal in a manner that will allow correct deposition of each succeeding layer of weld metal.
