About The Position

Reviews customer contract specifications, drawings and code requirements to determine the welding requirements for procedure and personnel qualifications in accordance with project specific requirements. Initiates procurement action by preparing and processing purchase orders for all weld material tests and all welder performance and procedure qualification sample testing. Develops and qualifies welding procedure specifications (WPS) and related procedure qualification records (PQR). Sets up and maintains master weld program files and record of welder or welding operator qualification tests for each welder’s qualification file. Prepares and issues/maintains operator qualification matrix and training schedules. Assists Engineering, Quality and Estimating departments with technical issues regarding welding and fabrication requirements for projects. Applies knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys to develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals. Develops and tests new fabrication processes and procedures, improves existing or develops new welding equipment, and develops new or modifies current welding methods, techniques, and procedures. Identifies and evaluates latest welding equipment, materials and techniques for possible application to shop welding practices or production processes. Serves as customer contact for technical issues regarding welding requirements. Evaluates new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes. Directs and coordinates technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure quality requirements are achieved and maintained in compliance with established welding procedures and standards in testing welds for conformance with national code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in metallurgical/materials engineering, or welding/materials engineering technology with additional relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years welding related experience, including welding metallurgy experience, in an automotive manufacturing environment.
  • Robotic welding experience is a must (example; ABB, Motoman, etc.).
  • Understanding of electrical controls circuitry and schematics.
  • Working knowledge of MIG and Resistance welding processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and statutes from jurisdictional agencies and governmental units, procedure manuals, and specification manuals.
  • Ability to write instructions, plant operating procedures, and routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, regulatory agencies, and employees of the organization.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply basic concepts of physical science.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding and create instructions from technical data or statutes furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations and procedures to situations.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Results oriented.
  • Ability to take a hands-on approach with strong decision making and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work well with others, organized with good communication skills in a fast-paced work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • AHSS steels and HFI experience is a plus.
  • AWS certification is a plus.
