About The Position

Join our Solid Waste Department as a Weighmaster and play an important role in supporting safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible waste disposal services for Cumberland County. In this customer-focused position, you will accurately record disposal weights, collect applicable fees, enforce site policies and procedures, and assist customers by directing them to the appropriate disposal areas. This role is essential to maintaining smooth daily operations at the County’s scale houses while providing exceptional service to residents and commercial users. The position is primarily performed while standing and includes a rotating schedule between the Ann Street and Wilkes Road scale houses, with hours Monday through Friday from 6:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and every other Saturday rotation. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of experience handling customers and money
  • Skill in accurately typing at a minimum of 35 words per minute.
  • Skill in operating a 10-key calculator efficiently to maintain accurate running totals.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, demonstrate initiative, and work independently as a self-starter.
  • Ability to analyze discrepancies (such as daily deposit variances), identify causes, and implement appropriate corrective measures.
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and professionalism when interacting with the public.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards and apply appropriate safety precautions in the performance of essential duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with internal staff, other departments, and external stakeholders.
  • Must obtain Landfill Operations Specialist certification within one year of employment (subject to Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) scheduling).
  • NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service License/Certificate – Weighmaster Certification within one year of employment.
  • Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties primarily while standing, processing incoming and outgoing loads, collecting payments, and accurately recording transactions in WasteWorks (weights, accounts, materials, prices, and vehicle identification).
  • Inspect loads through camera systems and direct visual checks to verify compliance and direct customers to the correct disposal areas.
  • Operate a computer to issue tickets/receipts, accept and process payments, reconcile cash and charge totals, review merchant card batch reports, complete end-of-day summaries, and prepare deposits in accordance with county procedures.
  • Provide professional customer service in person and by multiline phone, addressing questions on operating hours, disposal costs, acceptable materials, and procedures.
  • Educate and assist customers with required documentation for regulated debris types such as asbestos, tires, and recyclable materials.
  • Communicate with Solid Waste staff via handheld radio to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Demonstrate effective multitasking and time management skills in a fast-paced environment to ensure accurate service and customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain a clean and safe scale house by sweeping, mopping, and performing daily sanitization during shift changes.
  • Secure facilities by opening/closing the safe, setting/clearing alarms, and locking or unlocking the building.
