About The Position

The Weighmaster is responsible for weighing vehicles, inspecting and determining metal grades, handling associated paperwork, and communicating with dispatch, truck drivers, and customers. This role also involves assisting customers, collaborating with other employees in the scrap metal yard, processing end-of-day totals, and maintaining a clean and organized work area. The position requires adherence to safety regulations and effective housekeeping practices.

Requirements

  • Must pass a medical physical and drug test.
  • Must pass a background check and credit check.
  • Ability to communicate with others effectively.
  • Ability to understand direction (written or oral).
  • Ability to use basic math skills as the job demands.
  • Willingness to learn how to sort metal, identify colors, shapes, and weights.
  • Willingness to learn how to properly maintain equipment.
  • Willingness to learn how to properly utilize PPE.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential job functions.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or GED and/or foreign education acceptable.
  • Bi-lingual (English & Spanish) language skills a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Weigh vehicles full and empty to record purchases.
  • Inspect and determine metal grade for inventory tracking.
  • Handle paperwork associated with conducting business, delivery transactions, and government-required documentation.
  • Communicate with dispatch and truck drivers to determine schedules and volumes.
  • Communicate with customers when they bring objectionable materials.
  • Work with customers to satisfy their needs and assist them when problems arise.
  • Work with other employees in the scrap metal yard to ensure swift work when materials arrive.
  • Process and report end of day totals.
  • Ascend and descend staircases for inspections of loads.
  • Adhere to specific dress code for the position (no restrictive or excessively loose clothing or accessories that could pose a safety hazard).
  • Clean up work area at the end of shift.
  • Keep work areas neat and orderly.
  • Organize materials for more effective use of space.
  • Dispose of various waste materials in the appropriate manner.
  • Ensure cleanup is completed.
  • Maintain effective housekeeping in the workplace area for safety and hygienic conditions.
