About The Position

This position involves weighing vehicles to record purchases, inspecting and grading metal for inventory, and handling all associated paperwork, including delivery transactions and government-required documentation. The Weighmaster will also communicate with customers regarding their materials, assist them with their needs, and collaborate with other employees to ensure efficient operations in the scrap metal yard. Responsibilities include processing end-of-day totals, performing inspections that may involve ascending and descending staircases, adhering to a specific dress code for safety, and maintaining a clean and orderly work area. Effective housekeeping and proper waste disposal are ongoing operations crucial for safety and hygiene.

Requirements

  • Must pass a medical physical and drug test.
  • Must pass a background check and credit check.
  • Ability to communicate with others effectively.
  • Ability to understand direction (written or oral).
  • Ability to use basic math skills as the job demands.
  • Willingness to learn how to sort metal, identify colors, shapes, and weights.
  • Willingness to learn how to properly maintain equipment.
  • Willingness to learn how to properly utilize PPE.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential job functions.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or GED and/or foreign education acceptable.
  • Bi-lingual (English & Spanish) language skills a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Weigh vehicles full and empty to record purchases.
  • Inspect and determine metal grade for inventory tracking.
  • Handle paperwork associated with conducting business, delivery transactions, and government-required documentation.
  • Communicate with customers when they bring objectionable materials.
  • Work with customers to satisfy their needs and assist them when problems arise.
  • Work with other employees in the scrap metal yard to ensure swift work when materials arrive.
  • Process and report end of day totals.
  • Ascend and descend staircases for inspections of loads.
  • Adhere to specific dress code for the position (no restrictive or excessively loose clothing or accessories that could pose a safety hazard).
  • Clean up work area at the end of shift.
  • Keep work areas neat and orderly.
  • Organize materials for more effective use of space.
  • Dispose of various waste materials in the appropriate manner.
  • Inspect to ensure cleanup is completed.
  • Maintain effective housekeeping in the workplace area as an ongoing operation for safety and better hygienic conditions.
