About The Position

The Weekend Mine Supervisor contributes to the mine’s safety and productivity by managing underground mining activities during weekend operations and designated weekday shifts. This position serves as the acting Mine Manager on shift during assigned weekend operations and provides operational leadership support by filling supervisory roles as needed, including Section Supervisor, Assistant Shift Manager, or Shift Manager responsibilities. The Weekend Mine Supervisor ensures the mine operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all State and Federal mining laws while coordinating manpower, production activities, safety initiatives, and workforce performance for assigned crews. This position exercises independent judgment and decision-making authority regarding operational priorities, manpower allocation, production delays, equipment downtime, and safety-related work stoppages during assigned shifts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or GED required.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in an underground coal mining environment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ Section Supervisor experience or four (4) years’ documented experience in a leadership or lead role.
  • Previous experience as a Section Supervisor, Assistant Shift Manager, or Shift Manager strongly preferred.
  • First Class Miner Certification (Face Papers) required
  • Mine Examiner Certification required
  • Mine Manager Certification required
  • Valid Illinois State Driver’s License required.
  • Thorough knowledge of underground mining practices, equipment, and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of State and Federal mining laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of ventilation systems, roof control, section operations, production coordination, and mine safety practices.
  • Ability to make sound decisions regarding production, personnel, maintenance, and safety.
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures, hazard recognition, and accident prevention practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with all levels of management and hourly employees.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize operational needs.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong sense of accountability and follow-through.
  • Ability to read and understand mine plans and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple operational priorities in a dynamic underground mining environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the designated Mine Manager on shift during weekend operations and sign official records and examinations as required.
  • Coordinate, assign, and monitor underground mining activities to ensure production requirements are met in the safest and most efficient manner possible.
  • Review daily mining plans with Operations Management and evaluate workforce assignments to meet operational objectives.
  • Direct and coordinate labor needs for assigned shifts, including placement of qualified employees into appropriate work assignments.
  • Conduct routine inspections of underground sections and work areas to monitor production, ventilation, roof conditions, equipment conditions, housekeeping, and compliance with mine safety regulations.
  • Review and sign examiner books, pre-shift reports, and other required documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all State and Federal mine laws, company policies, and safe work procedures.
  • Coordinate job assignments and communicate operational priorities to section supervisors, crew leaders, and hourly employees.
  • Monitor and communicate production, safety, and operational performance metrics during assigned shifts.
  • Prepare and communicate shift turnover information and operational status reports to management personnel.
  • Exercise independent decision-making authority regarding production delays, equipment downtime, manpower allocation, and safety-related work stoppages during assigned shifts.
  • Assist in maintaining labor stability and promoting teamwork among employees.
  • Conduct and participate in safety meetings, pre-shift meetings, and production planning discussions.
  • Provide leadership coverage in the absence of management personnel by performing the responsibilities of: Section Supervisor, Assistant Shift Manager, and Shift Manager.
  • Must be capable of performing all operational and supervisory responsibilities associated with Section Supervisor, Assistant Shift Manager, and Shift Manager positions.
  • Assist with emergency response coordination and incident management when necessary.
  • Direct initial emergency response actions and coordinate communication with mine management and emergency personnel during incidents or hazardous conditions.
  • Ensure required reports, records, and regulatory documentation are completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assist in developing supervisory talent and mentoring crew leaders and employees in safe and productive mining practices.
  • Promote continuous improvement in safety, productivity, communication, and workforce development.
  • Must be available to respond to operational issues, emergencies, or staffing needs during assigned weekend operations.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Supervise and motivate employees assigned to weekend and designated weekday operations.
  • Provide operational leadership and authority to underground crews during assigned shifts.
  • Coordinate with Mine Management, maintenance personnel, and section leadership to ensure efficient mine operations.
  • Maintain accountability for production performance, workforce efficiency, and safe operating practices during assigned shifts.
