About The Position

CBC Saskatchewan is looking for an experienced journalist and newsroom leader to drive our daily and enterprise news coverage as an assignment producer. The role can be based in either Regina or Saskatoon. This is a permanent, full-time role that will include weekends and three weekdays. Reporting to the Executive Producer, News, the successful candidate will join the team that assigns our newsgathering resources, decides what stories to cover, when and by whom. You will help set the news agenda for Saskatchewan on weekends, and continue that work on our assignment desk for three days during the week. You will be familiar with the editorial needs of audiences in both Regina and Saskatoon. You will be an editorial leader and an experienced mentor, someone who demonstrates sound news judgment and critical thinking skills in both breaking news and enterprise reporting, and who inspires others to be innovative and creative. As a leader, you are naturally collaborative, skilled at navigating conflict and change, breaking down silos and developing a representative and inclusive culture. You will have experience in all aspects of news, from breaking events to investigative projects, and you will thrive as part of a team in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of a multi-platform newsroom. You understand that daily news can be a flat-out sprint to deadline, with myriad complex decisions to make along the way, so organizational skills are key. You will be a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of your decision-making, ensuring our news content on all of all platforms connects our audiences to the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities. You will strive to broaden the range of perspectives and experiences reflected in our news content, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. You will ensure that all our work adheres to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices and that it upholds our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience leading a team in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.
• Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
• Ability to manage and organize large volumes of fast-moving information and redirect resources to meet priorities and objectives.
• Knowledge of and experience in assigning and creating content for all platforms (video, digital, social, radio, television, streaming) as well as vetting, editing, fact-checking and packaging.
• Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
• A strategic thinker with a proven track record of executing on a vision.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long-term planning.
• A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams, encourage creativity and embrace experimentation.

• Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
• University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of seven years of journalism experience.
• Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

Responsibilities

• Organize and lead news coverage across all platforms (video, digital, social, radio, television, streaming), including making decisions about story priorities and rollouts, allocating resources and assigning staff, and providing editorial oversight to ensure our content is original, relevant and impactful, and meets our journalistic standards.
• Oversee all aspects of story development including assigning, researching, gathering, writing, copy editing, vetting, packaging and push alerts.
• Oversee the distribution of our content on multiple platforms,
• Ensure assignments and content choices resonate with residents of Saskatchewan and align with CBC’s strategic objectives to connect with and grow audiences.
• Oversee and collaborate with the other producers on the assignment desk (mornings, afternoons, weekends) to ensure continuity of news coverage.
• Coordinate and collaborate on story assignments with producers of digital, visuals and current affairs radio, the weekend Radio-Canada team, as well as with producers in other locations and program units.
• Provide feedback and coaching to journalists to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality.
• Help lead the planning of newsroom-wide coverage for special projects and events.
• Help oversee staffing and scheduling decisions.
