About The Position

Nexstar Media Inc. has an immediate opening for an experienced Weekend AM Meteorologist who is ready to take on a high-profile role for DC News Now in the Washington, DC DMA (Market #8). The candidate must have a proven track record of weather forecasting and on-air presentation skills in a mid-to-large sized market and deliver the forecast with energy and professionalism. The Meteorologist should thrive on breaking weather events and news and be ready to adlib and guide the viewer through the station’s coverage. This is a competitive news market covering a large geographic region across multiple states. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership qualities – taking ownership of assigned shows, being a role model for the team and working to distinguish our forecasting in the market. The Meteorologist can expect to be involved in station initiatives and interact with the community. The Meteorologist should expect to be involved in editorial meetings, and work collaboratively with producers and management. Washington, DC may be at the center of the nation’s politics, but the city and its immediate metro area has so much more to offer. For example, the city is home to world-class museums like the Smithsonian, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National Archives. Theaters with live events, concerts, street festivals, farmers markets and a vibrant arts community all contribute to a terrific quality of life. Add to that access to the National Parks in the area, bike trails and a robust restaurant scene with 20 Michelin-rated venues in 2021 alone, there’s something for everyone. The Meteorologist forecast weather conditions and produces and anchors weather reports for all platforms in a manner that is clear, engaging and meaningful to news consumers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
  • 3-5 years on-camera experience in a medium-to-large sized media market
  • Fluency in English.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required.
  • Superior on-air presence.
  • Proficiency with Baron’s Weather system.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively listen to fully understand problems and communicate with a team to shape a solution.
  • Strong understanding of the field of meteorology and a proven track record of forecasting.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Flexibility to work any shift.

Responsibilities

  • Produces and presents weather reports for all platforms.
  • Ensures that all weather content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
  • Writes and delivers weather stories in a clear and concise manner.
  • Assists in writing, copy editing, researching and coordinating weather programming and other content.
  • Responds to breaking and/or severe weather events and other urgent newsrooms situations as required.
  • Works closely with the weather team to develop comprehensive weather coverage.
  • Participates in promotional activities including public appearances.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Writes web stories detailing the local forecast on a daily basis.
  • Interacts with viewers and users on social media sites.
