About The Position

This position reports to the Natural Resources Program Coordinator. This position is responsible for assisting with the protection of the Turtle Creek and McLaughlin watersheds, and ensuring that all federal, provincial and municipal regulations and by-laws are respected. The Watershed Protection Coordinator may be requested to act as a resource on various projects as required.

Requirements

  • Must have a two (2) year diploma in chemistry, microbiology, environment, forestry, or related field.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain the designation as an Environmental Inspector under the Clean Water Act.
  • Must have three (3) years related experience in a field related to water quality management, and/or forest management, and watershed protection.
  • Must obtain the appropriate training in Water Distribution as per the City’s Certificates of Approval to Operate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both languages (oral; English and French) is required. Must meet INTERMEDIATE PLUS(2+) Level as per the Province of New Brunswick Linguistic Standards in both languages as a minimum requirement.
  • Specialized knowledge and understanding of water quality guidelines, forestry, wildlife, and natural resources.
  • Thorough and current knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal law, by-laws, and policies with respect to reservoirs and watersheds.
  • Self-motivated and show capability in program development, coordination, and delivery.
  • Current and knowledgeable in best management practices associated with water quality and watershed protection, as well as forestry operations to protect water quality.
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Ability to produce documents and reports using industry software (e.g., Microsoft Outlook / Word / Excel / PowerPoint, ADOBE, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to write, interpret, and prepare analytical reports.
  • Must possess strong organizational and time management skills and be capable of working without direct supervision.
  • Must be amendable to working outdoors in all types of weather conditions and remote worksites.
  • Ability to lift 25 kg (50 pounds).

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates with INTERMEDIATE (2) Level English/ French language proficiency may be considered if recruitment is difficult, but must meet the INTERMEDIATE PLUS (2+) Level English/ French language proficiency within 2 years.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the protection of the Turtle Creek and McLaughlin watersheds.
  • Ensuring that all federal, provincial and municipal regulations and by-laws are respected.
  • Acting as a resource on various projects as required.
  • Providing guidance to outside organizations involved with watershed projects or activities.
  • Indirect supervision of CUPE staff.
  • Training and supervision of small work crews and summer students with respect to assigned duties.
  • Acting as a supervisor when the Natural Resources Program Coordinator is not available.
