About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is seeking a Wastewater Treatment Area Operator to maintain and repair machines and equipment used to process and distribute water. This role involves sampling, measuring, and monitoring waste/water effluent quality to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. The position reports directly to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor IV and is crucial for maintaining the operational efficiency and environmental safety of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) Diploma and three (3) years of experience in wastewater treatment operations and maintenance, which includes making prescribed chemical and bacteriological analysis of water/wastewater.
  • Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge and skill in the operation, maintenance, and repair of applicable machines, equipment, and tools.
  • Knowledge of state and local laws, ordinances and regulations related to the area.
  • Possess or obtain C-Well, spray irrigation and subsurface certifications within 24 months.
  • Obtain & maintain Pesticide Applicator certification within 24 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting and analyzing samples at various stages of the Wastewater Treatment Plant process, including flow measurement, dissolved oxygen, settleable matter, temperature, and pH.
  • Observing the operation of the Treatment Plant and performing preventative maintenance on pumps, blowers, electric motors, filters, tanks, basins, recirculation and sludge pumps, and other equipment to prevent failure.
  • Interpreting on-site test results and certified laboratory analysis for Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Total Suspended Solids, Fecal Coliform, and Ammonia Nitrogen to evaluate plant operation efficiency.
  • Implementing necessary treatment process controls.
  • Recognizing wastewater treatment conditions and making necessary corrections, such as setting, adjusting, and monitoring regulators, timers, and control mechanisms, and determining correct chemical amounts for safe and efficient treatment.
  • Performing major repairs to the Treatment Plant to ensure immediate equipment repair and prevent potential health or environmental hazards, including bypassing treatment processes or addressing septic conditions due to equipment failure.
  • Supervising offender labor for the daily maintenance and cleaning of the Treatment Plant and associated equipment, including cleaning lift station bar screens, waste disposal, maintenance of drying beds, and general maintenance of electric motors and other plant components.
  • Achieving efficient operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant within established environmental standards, meeting required effluent quality, monitoring and reporting effluent quality, and ensuring proper application of sludge on permitted land.
  • Monitoring and accurately adjusting valves, pumps, blowers, recirculation systems, equalization basin flow, and chemical additive systems to maintain correct operational levels.
  • Maintaining daily records and charts indicating plant operational efficiency levels for review by the Facility Maintenance Supervisor and Engineering Section.
