About The Position

Under general supervision, this position performs the most complex mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of water meters and responds to and resolves a variety of customer requests related to water service installations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the installation, operation, inspection, repair and testing of water meters and meter boxes to include the principles of water meter testing and operation.
  • General knowledge of RPZ backflow Preventer Testing requirements and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the proper procedures for operating, inspecting, and maintaining assigned equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to the meter maintenance and other work-related precautions.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees and the public. Effectively responds to and resolves inquiries and disputes.
  • Plans and organizes daily work assignments. Estimates expected time of completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly. Implement work activities in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and proposals effectively, including the preparation of reports and logs. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. Ability to manage a variety of customer service issues with tact, diplomacy and in a confidential manner.
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate situations and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions.
  • Requires a high school diploma and 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License with an acceptable record.
  • Acceptable general background check, to include a local and state criminal history check and pre-employment drug testing.
  • The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during and following natural disasters and emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct preventative maintenance checks and repairs; checks meters for repairs, performs flow checks, collects and analyzes water samples, and performs flushing for water quality problems; responds to customer inquiries and complaints regarding water service; troubleshoots and helps manage emergency situations; and helps operate well systems.
  • Operate and organize the use of utility tools, equipment, and vehicles to include maintenance and general appearance checks, cleans vehicle and schedules preventative maintenance service.
  • Ensures the safety of County equipment, private and public property, and others by following proper safety procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
