About The Position

The City of Yuma is seeking a Water Treatment Plant Mechanic to join the Department of Utilities- Water Treatment Plant Division. This role involves performing skilled work related to equipment, machinery, and components in City of Yuma Water operating plants. Under basic supervision, the mechanic will install, repair, inspect, and maintain equipment at Water treatment plants, satellite facilities, and lift stations, ensuring equipment meets job specifications and technical codes. The position emphasizes professionalism, accountability, integrity, and responsiveness, contributing to serving the community and building relationships.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of mechanical and electrical repair, maintenance, and installation experience, preferably in an industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and procedures used in Water system maintenance and repairs.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions in a Water treatment plant.
  • Knowledge of Federal and state safety rules and regulations and emergency response procedures in Water treatment plant environments.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting technical plans, schematics, and specifications.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting gauges and recording devices.
  • Skill in safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Skill in making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Skill in following safe work practices, and verbal and written instructions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required.
  • A valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License will be required within twelve months of hire.
  • Incumbents must meet SCBA medical fitness evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • Water Grade 1 certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is preferred.
  • Additional technical training and certifications may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, adjusts, repairs, installs, and replaces Water equipment, machinery, and components in Water operating plants.
  • Inspects Water facilities, equipment, and systems, performing work within the scope of authority, under proper supervision, and in accordance with quality standards, safety regulations, and procedures.
  • Checks facilities and equipment to verify proper operating conditions, recognizes abnormally operating equipment, and uses standard methods to diagnose conditions and identify maintenance needs.
  • Repairs equipment and components and performs preventive and predictive maintenance on mechanical and electromechanical equipment and components as directed.
  • Notifies supervisors of problems beyond the scope of authority.
  • Verifies equipment functions meet job specifications and technical codes.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals.
  • Assists with maintenance of facilities and grounds.
  • Tests and maintains backflow prevention devices.
  • Custom fabricates material and equipment.
  • Operates heavy equipment.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior.
  • Promotes City goals and priorities, vision, values, and the "Yuma Way".
  • Complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
