About The Position

The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Technician or Water Systems Technician l – IV to join the Wastewater Collections team in the Water and Sewer Department. The Technician will report to the Crew Supervisor I - Wastewater Collections and will assist in the routine maintenance of sanitary sewer lines and other related equipment and facilities. The Maintenance Technician will inspect and perform necessary repairs and perform preventive maintenance necessary to maintain sanitary sewer lines. The position requires field work involving working in confined spaces, excavation trenches, and near the operation of heavy equipment. Specific tasks may involve operating various equipment, keeping logs on corrections, ordering, and installing replacement parts, etc. Stand-by duty for emergency call-in is rotated among division employees.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required for licensure in the State of Colorado)
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of working with methods, materials and equipment used in utility maintenance.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and light-to heavy equipment.
  • Ability to participate in a rotating standby/on-call schedule and respond to the designated work location within 45 minutes, when required.
  • Zero (0) to One (1) year of related experience (for Technician I).
  • Colorado Wastewater Collection System Operator Class 1 Certification is required within one (1) year of employment (for Technician I).
  • Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment (for Technician I).
  • Two (2) years of related experience (for Technician II).
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required (for Technician II).
  • Colorado Wastewater Collection System Operator 2 Certification (for Technician II).
  • Three (3) years of related experience (for Technician III).
  • Colorado Wastewater Collection System Operator 3 Certification (for Technician III).
  • Four (4) years of related experience (for Technician IV).
  • Colorado Wastewater Collection System Operator 4 Certification (for Technician IV).
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job (for Technician IV).
  • Knowledge of water system construction, maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of confined space entry, trench safety, traffic control, workplace safety practices, and other applicable utility safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of maintenance tools, equipment, and materials used in utility operations.
  • Skills in operating hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and vehicles safely and effectively.
  • Skills in reading and interpreting maps, utility plans, electrical schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Skills in recordkeeping, work order documentation, time management, and effective communication.
  • Skills in utilizing Microsoft Office applications, CityWorks or similar work management software, and other technology used to support utility operations.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies, participate in on-call rotations, and adapt to changing operational priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while maintaining effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, maintain accurate records, and provide quality customer service.
  • Ability to learn new technologies, software, equipment, and work processes as required.
  • Mobility: Ability to frequently walk, stand, climb ladders, enter and exit manholes, navigate uneven terrain, work in confined spaces, and access wastewater collection system infrastructure.
  • Strength: Ability to regularly lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move heavier materials up to 100 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment.
  • Endurance: Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods in varying weather conditions while maintaining attention to safety and quality.
  • Dexterity: Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, controls, and specialized wastewater collection equipment requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach overhead and below waist level, and work in restricted or awkward positions while performing maintenance and repair activities.
  • Vision and Hearing: Ability to maintain visual acuity to inspect equipment, read gauges, maps, work orders, and technical information, distinguish colors when required, and safely perform work. Ability to hear verbal instructions, equipment sounds, alarms, and warning signals in a variety of work environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior water, sewer, or streets maintenance related experience preferred.
  • Prior mechanical experience is preferred.
  • Prior experience and comfortability working in a heavy traffic environment preferred.
  • Flagger or Traffic Control certification.
  • Confined Space Entry training or certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspection, maintenance, repair, cleaning, and rehabilitation of sanitary sewer mains, service lines, manholes, lift stations, and related wastewater collection system infrastructure.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance activities to improve system reliability and reduce emergency repairs.
  • Inspects and performs necessary repairs and preventative maintenance on sanitary sewer lines.
  • Perform confined space entry, excavation work, traffic control, and other field activities while following established safety procedures.
  • Operates various equipment.
  • Creates and maintains logs on maintenance, corrections, ordering of supplies, and installation of replacement parts.
  • Participates in stand-by duty for emergency call-ins on a rotational basis.
  • Complete work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, equipment logs, and related documentation utilizing CityWorks or other computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and serviceable condition.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, supervisors, and the public while providing excellent customer service.
  • Participate in departmental safety meetings and required training programs.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to emergency callouts after normal working hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
