About The Position

Under general supervision, the Water Supply Trainee position is a progressive experience position responsible for monitoring, maintain, and operating grounds, equipment, recording data, collecting samples, and system process control in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines. This role involves analyzing and monitoring water treatment system processes, identifying and implementing simple process adjustments, and observing and inspecting plant influent and effluent and all plant equipment. The trainee will operate and maintain process equipment, including preventive maintenance and repair, and check engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, and chemical feed systems. Responsibilities also include recording readings, regulating and adjusting processes, collecting and preserving samples for laboratory analysis, and participating in transmission water main maintenance. The position requires monitoring and performing housekeeping duties to ensure a safe working environment, performing basic process control measurements, lubricating, dismantling, and assembling parts and equipment, and participating in troubleshooting and preventive maintenance of various equipment. The role involves performing basic mathematical calculations, preparing daily logs of plant operation and control, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, and participating in various special projects. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; AND one-year experience in Water Treatment operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • The ability to obtain a Water Treatment Operator “D” license from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TECQ) within six months of employment.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of water treatment principles, methods and practices.
  • Ability to handle dangerous chemicals, such as chlorine gas, caustic soda, and hydrofluorosilicic acid.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and equipment used in water treatment.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance procedures and processes.
  • Knowledge of SCADA system operations.
  • Knowledge of water sampling procedures.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry.
  • Knowledge of water distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws, codes, regulations and permits affecting water treatment operations.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping and reporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Skill in handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
  • Skill in understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in compiling data; maintaining records and files; and preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Skill in providing efficient customer service.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Water Treatment Operator “C” (Surface Water) license prior to the expiration of the “D” license.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • May require possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and monitors water treatment system processes, and identifies and implements simple process adjustments to ensure optimum performance of plant.
  • Observes and inspects plant influent and effluent and all plant equipment at regular intervals, including, but not limited to, monitoring and maintaining proper water levels in storage tanks and/or overflow boxes.
  • Operates and maintains process equipment including but not limited to, preventive maintenance, repair, grounds keeping, and general housekeeping.
  • Checks engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, chemical feed systems, and other equipment.
  • Records readings, changes charts, regulates and adjusts processes to meet changing operational needs.
  • Collects, preserves, and properly stores samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Participates in transmission water main maintenance by exercising system valves, monitoring the pipeline for leaks, and participating in shutdowns during repairs.
  • Monitors and performs housekeeping duties to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Performs basic process control measurements.
  • Lubricates, dismantles, and assembles parts and equipment.
  • Participates in the troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of a variety of equipment including pumps, piping and valves.
  • Performs basic mathematical calculations.
  • Prepares daily logs of plant operation and control.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships.
  • Participates in various special projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
