About The Position

As a Water & Sewer Mains Technician, you’ll play a vital role in keeping the City of High Point’s water and sewer systems running smoothly. From installing and repairing pipes, meters, and valves to ensuring the distribution and collection systems are in top condition, no two days will be the same. You’ll work alongside a dedicated team, maintaining essential infrastructure and supporting the city's facilities—plus, you’ll have the chance to take on a variety of tasks, including cleaning duties, to keep everything in top shape. Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on call.
  • Manual Dexterity: Regular use of hands and arms for reaching, grasping, and handling objects, as well as fine motor skills for tasks requiring precision.
  • Hearing and Speaking: Ability to communicate effectively in noisy environments, both to give directives and respond to questions.
  • Visual Abilities: Far acuity, Near acuity, Depth perception, Field of vision, Accommodation.
  • Physical Strength: Exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds consistently.
  • Physical tasks include sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, lifting, bending, and using arms, hands, legs, and feet.
  • Repetitive Tasks: Frequent use of reaching, handling, and fingering.
  • Reasoning: Ability to apply logical thinking to solve problems, respond to emergencies, and follow directives effectively.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to calculate material requirements for projects (e.g., concrete, asphalt).
  • Language Ability: Ability to read and comprehend manuals, plans, safety regulations, and other job-related documents.
  • Writing: Ability to document tasks, prepare reports, and maintain accurate records.
  • Must have a strong understanding of traffic and safety regulations, as well as the maintenance, repair, and construction of water and sewer systems.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • CDL permit with Tanker Endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • CDL with Tanker Endorsement or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • Basic First-Aid, CPR, and AED certification required within 1 year of hire (American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council).

Responsibilities

  • Operate motorized sewer cleaning equipment, including flusher, vacuum, and rodding machinery.
  • Assist in the installation, replacement, and repair of water mains, sewer lines, taps, fire hydrants, valves, and meters.
  • Respond to water and sewer line issues, cleaning lines and manholes as needed.
  • Raise and lower manholes and valve boxes.
  • Tap high-pressure lines and make connections.
  • Inspect sewer lines using TV inspection systems.
  • Support W/S Technicians and Crew Leaders by preparing and distributing tools, equipment, and materials for ongoing projects.
  • Set up traffic control signs, ensuring safety for work crews.
  • Operate service vehicles, transporting materials and equipment to and from job sites.
  • Able to work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Rotate on-call duties, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Use hand tools to perform various tasks related to utility line maintenance.
  • Communicate with team members and departments using a two-way radio.
  • Ensure all work complies with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
