About The Position

Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a Water/Sewer/Streets (WSS) Crew Leader to work within the Sewer section and provide on-site leadership and technical guidance to sewer construction teams. The Sewer Construction team specializes in storm and sanitary sewer installation and repair; manhole/catch basin installation and repair; and pipe repair, installation, and replacement. The position applies their knowledge of asphalt (potholes & full depth patches) and concrete (curb and gutter, sidewalks) maintenance and installation. The WSS Crew Leader provides on-site leadership to team members on a daily basis; reports to the Trades Manager/Leader I; and may assume the role of the Trades Manager/Leader I in his/her absence.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Three years of experience in public works, construction or another trade vocation that demonstrates the ability to perform skilled manual maintenance and/or construction
  • One year of trades work that includes responsibility for providing leadership to other trades workers and/or managing trades projects
  • Possession of a valid Class "B" or "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Must work on-call duty, on a weekly rotating basis, which includes assisting the Trades Manager with preparing the on-call stand-by list
  • Employees must learn and follow all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions, which includes attending all required safety classes and meetings in order to ensure a safe working environment and to ensure team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.
  • Due to the work environment and as a condition of employment, Arlington County employees may be required to wear various personal protective equipment in the performance of their duties.
  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Performing daily construction, maintenance and repair in sewer construction and one other technical area
  • Using Microsoft Office to perform administrative functions such as time reporting, activity, personal injury, accident and vehicle reports

  • Possession of or ability to obtain the following certification: Intermediate Work Zone certification

Responsibilities

  • Working with the supervisor daily in scheduling crew work and providing technical expertise and feedback to crew members on all areas related to sewer construction and repair work while resolving on-site issues
  • Directing crew members on-site in technical procedures involving sewer construction, construction project management, and performing back-up work as needed
  • Ensuring new team members are trained
  • Applying safety precautions, and ensuring that supplies, tools, materials and equipment are available for the job
  • Performing installation and repairs on appurtenances such as manholes, catch basins, sidewalks, ADA ramps and both sewer and storm pipes
  • Coordinating project completion by interacting with and providing information to citizens, contractors, Miss Utility locators, engineers, and surveyors
  • Utilizing asset management systems to complete administrative functions and to track and log equipment, materials, and labor for assigned tasks
  • Creating reports using MS Office
  • Responding and mobilizing the team in emergency situations, including communicating with appropriate staff
  • Interacting with citizens, contractors, Miss Utility locators, and engineers
  • Resolving on-site problems as they arise ensuring that all safety precautions are taken
