About The Position

This position leads a crew in performing skilled tasks related to the repair, operation, maintenance, and installation of Water Utility assets. The role involves mentoring and training lower-level workers, troubleshooting and resolving customer complaints, and responding to emergency situations 24/7. The incumbent will also learn and utilize complex data software systems.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).
  • Five years of experience in construction and/or the operation, maintenance and repair of a public or private water, wastewater or storm water system; OR Two years of experience as a City of Dayton Water & Sewer Worker I or Water & Sewer Worker II with an Ohio EPA Class I Water Distribution or Class I Wastewater Collections certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter.
  • Within 150 days of appointment must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) with a Tanker Endorsement, including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio.
  • Out of state residents must have equivalent licenses from their state of residence at time of appointment/promotion and maintain thereafter.
  • An Ohio EPA Class I Wastewater Collection certification OR an Ohio EPA Class I Water Distribution certification is required within 30 months of appointment/promotion and must be maintained thereafter.
  • Must be a full-time permanent or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 118 (Wage) or below, pay grade 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position (for promotional qualifications).

Responsibilities

  • Leads a crew in the performance of a variety of skilled tasks including the repair, operation, maintenance and installation of Water Utility assets.
  • Mentors and assists with training the Water & Sewer Worker I's and Water & Sewer Worker II's.
  • Troubleshoots complaints and resolves or gathers necessary information for the resolution of such problems independently in the field or office.
  • Responds to on-call emergency situations 24 hours a day, year-round.
  • Learns and uses complex data software systems.
