About The Position

Under direction of the assigned supervisor, performs operations, maintenance, repair and construction work on the District's water system. The Water Service Technician-in-Training works with the water crew as assigned, performing essential duties at the appropriate level of training to operate and maintain the District's water system. They study and learn required job knowledge and skills to advance through and complete the training program within the required timeframe. The Water Service Technician operates chlorination facilities, maintains records of operations, maintenance, repairs, and construction, and operates and maintains water system facilities. They participate in the Water Department on-call rotation for standby and assist in on-the-job training as necessary.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Considerable knowledge of water system facilities including production, transmission, and distribution systems (Water Service Technician).
Considerable knowledge and understanding of safety standards and practices (Water Service Technician).
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of water system operation, maintenance, repair and construction standards and practices (Water Service Technician).
Considerable knowledge of the use of hand tools, power tools, heavy equipment and materials used in operation, maintenance, repair and construction of water systems (Water Service Technician).
Ability to create and maintain records and paperwork related to job task in a clear and accurate manner (Water Service Technician).
Ability to communicate and work effectively with customers, contractors and co-workers using tact and diplomacy (Water Service Technician).
Must possess a California Department of Health Services Water Treatment Operator Grade I (T1) certificate and a Distribution Operator Grade 3 (D3) certificate (Water Service Technician).
Possession of valid Department of Motor Vehicles Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement, typically within 90 days of appointment (Water Service Technician).
Some knowledge of water systems and construction principles is desired (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Some experience driving and operating vehicles and heavy equipment is desired (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Basic knowledge of use of tools and equipment used in water systems is desired (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Ability to follow directions and work with other personnel as assigned (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Ability to learn the knowledge of principles and practices of water systems operations and water facilities, including production, transmission and distribution (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Ability to effectively read and follow operations and safety manuals (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Ability to perform mathematic calculations and/or computations correctly (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Ability to communicate and work effectively with customers and other co-workers with clarity and tact (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Must have a valid Class A CDL driver's license or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
Must pass the District required physical exam and meet the requirements of the DOT certification.

Nice To Haves

Successful completion of the District's Service Technician-in-training program or three (3) years equivalent experience in the water utility industry (Water Service Technician).
Must successfully complete the District's Water Department Service Training and Certification program within 3 years of hire (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
Must comply with the District's residency requirement by the completion of training program (Water Service Technician-in-Training).

Responsibilities

Drives and operates vehicles and heavy equipment related to the water industry, including backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, and vactor trucks.
Digs trenches, installs, repairs, and replaces water mains, meters, and new services.
Operates and maintains tools and equipment used in water systems, including jackhammers, wackers, grinders, and tapping machines.
Responds to customer water problems and outages, including after-hour callouts.
Conducts themselves in a manner that is consistent with the District's Core Values of Safety, Communication, Integrity, Accountability, Timeliness, and Work-Life Balance.
Operates chlorination facilities (Water Service Technician).
Maintains records of operations, maintenance, repairs, and construction (Water Service Technician).
Operates and maintains water system facilities (Water Service Technician).

Assists in on-the-job training as necessary (Water Service Technician).
Works with water crew as assigned (Water Service Technician-in-Training).
