About The Position

The Water Safety Instructor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing courses. The role requires the ability to communicate with people of all ages and to be a positive example to patrons. The instructor is responsible for the property of the City of Harker Heights Aquatics Center and must submit reports on accidents, damage, staff issues, and user complaints to the Pool Supervisor. Familiarity with course materials and their effective use is essential. The instructor must adapt teaching approaches to participant experience, ability, and culture, ensuring participant health and safety by maintaining hazard-free areas and safe equipment. The role involves organizing the class environment for optimal performance and minimal distractions, covering all required course material, and supervising Water Safety Instructor Aides. The instructor will administer and score final examinations and issue course-completion certificates. Attendance is an essential function of the job, and the employee must exhibit the City of Harker Heights’ Core Values.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Certified as a WSI First Aid & CPR.
  • Experience in swim courses.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Visual awareness.
  • Ability to interact with all users of the pool.
  • Ability to relate rules and directions.
  • Ability to provide support and encouragement to swimmers.
  • Ability to communicate with the Aquatic Supervisor and the City of Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certifications required by American Red Cross.

Responsibilities

  • Arriving to work on time and ready to work.
  • Being a positive example to patrons.
  • Being responsible for the property of the City of Harker Heights Aquatics Center.
  • Submitting reports to Pool Supervisor on accidents, damage to facilities and equipment, problems among staff, and complaints from facility users.
  • Being familiar with course materials and knowing how to use them effectively.
  • Planning, coordinating, and managing courses in conjunction with the local Red Cross unit.
  • Adapting teaching approaches to the experience, ability, and culture of participants so that they can meet course objectives.
  • Providing for the health and safety of participants, including making sure that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment are safe.
  • Organizing the class environment to enhance individual and group performance and to minimize distractions.
  • Covering all material required in a course.
  • Supervising and giving guidance to any Water Safety Instructor Aides assisting with a course.
  • Administering and scoring the final examination when applicable.
  • Issuing course-completion certificates.
  • Exhibiting the City of Harker Heights’ Core Values.
