About The Position

Ulteig is seeking a motivated and technically driven Water Resources Engineer to join our growing Hydrology & Hydraulics (H&H) team. This role primarily supports the delivery of drainage and hydraulic design solutions for transportation and bridge design projects, while also contributing to stormwater planning, water quality, and regulatory efforts. The selected candidate will also work across design and planning phases—supporting project delivery through detailed hydraulic analysis, feasibility evaluations, stormwater studies, and client coordination. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of projects while contributing to technical excellence and team development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • 4-6+ years of experience primarily focused on H&H and drainage design
  • Proficiency with industry-standard software (HY-8, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, ArcGIS, ORD-DU, Civil 3D, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with other team disciplines
  • Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) or working toward certification
  • Experience designing storm drain, ditches, and culverts for transportation projects
  • Experience with bridge hydraulics and scour analysis
  • Experience with advanced modeling software (HEC-RAS 2D, SRH-2D, InfoWorks ICM, SWMM, LSPC, etc.)
  • Understanding of stormwater regulations and compliance with state and local agency standards
  • Familiarity with FEMA floodplain permitting process and map revisions
  • Experience preparing drainage studies/reports and PS&E deliverables
  • Strong ownership of deliverables and quality
  • Ability to translate analysis into practical design solutions
  • Proactive, team-oriented mindset
  • Interest in contributing to team growth and client relationships

Responsibilities

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for transportation corridors, bridge crossings, and drainage systems
  • Design hydraulic features such as culverts, bridges, storm drain systems, and channel improvements
  • Develop and apply 1D and 2D hydraulic models (HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SRH-2D)
  • Prepare drainage reports and floodplain documentation (CLOMR/LOMR, No-Rise)
  • Conduct scour analyses using HEC-18, HEC-20, and HEC-23 guidance
  • Coordinate with roadway, structural, and environmental teams
  • Review calculations, plans, and specifications for quality and constructability
  • Support stormwater planning, feasibility studies, and system evaluations
  • Perform analyses to assess existing and future stormwater conditions
  • Assist with permitting and regulatory documentation
  • Evaluate stormwater BMPs and system improvements
  • Prepare technical memos and planning-level reports
  • Support project execution including scope, schedule, and budget tracking
  • Collaborate with clients, agencies, and internal teams
  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff
  • Support proposals and business development efforts
