The Water Reclamation Plant Operator I position involves working as part of a team to operate, monitor, service, and clean a wide range of specialized equipment in a large, complex Water Reclamation Facility. Operators are responsible for all stages of wastewater treatment, including primary, secondary, advanced, tertiary, disinfection and cogeneration processes. The role includes operating and monitoring plant equipment such as pumps, valves, filters, chemical feed systems, digesters and cogeneration units. Operators conduct routine sampling, testing, and data collection to monitor water quality and process conditions, and they take corrective actions when necessary. They perform minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment and facilities, while more complex repairs are handled by specialized maintenance personnel. Additional duties include assisting with the training of new staff, following assignments from supervisors or Water Reclamation Plant Operator II(s), and ensuring compliance with operational procedures. When not performing shift operations, the operator may carry out basic grounds maintenance such as mowing and snow removal. Accurate recordkeeping of plant operations, equipment status, and maintenance activities is also a key part of the job. Work is performed independently or in collaboration with other team members, with the goal of ensuring the safe, reliable, and continuous operation of the Water Reclamation Facility.
