About The Position

Responsible for monitoring and maintaining the City of Denton wastewater treatment plant to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations and regulatory compliance. This role involves performing various lab tests, interpreting results, addressing equipment and system issues through troubleshooting, and monitoring plant operations using instrumentation, SCADA, and lab data. The operator will make process control adjustments, perform preventative maintenance, conduct visual equipment inspections, and maintain lubrication and filtration systems. Understanding system process flows, shutdown requirements, and lift station protocols is also part of the duties. The role requires utilizing computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for record-keeping and equipment condition reports, completing minor equipment adjustments, and collaborating with personnel and external service providers. Adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety protocols (including Confined Space and Lockout/Tagout), and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory. The position also involves operating tools and complex equipment, maintaining logs and records, and potentially working irregular or prolonged hours, including responding to after-hour emergencies.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years’ experience in mechanical equipment operation/use, or related field
  • Must have and maintain a valid Grade “B” Wastewater Treatment License issued from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local Government laws, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Skill in comprehending and interpreting data using SCADA, information management systems, graphs, and charts.
  • Skill in problem solving; identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Skill at the beginner level, working with applicable Microsoft Office 365 products, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to handle records and complex situations of a confidential nature.
  • Ability to read and understand plans and specifications on equipment.

  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various lab tests and interpret results to ensure appropriate plant function.
  • Address equipment and system issues with operational problem troubleshooting using historical trending, data, and lab results.
  • Monitor plant operations by observation, instrumentation, SCADA, and laboratory test results; make and perform process control adjustments as needed.
  • Interpret technical data from SCADA, Information Management Systems, graphs, and charts.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment.
  • Monitor operational parameters identifying abnormal conditions including noise levels, vibration, temperatures, pressures, and airflow.
  • Conduct visual equipment inspections for corrosion, wear, damage, and proper component integrity; notify appropriate personnel for needed repairs.
  • Inspect and maintain lubrication and filtration systems, checking oil levels, assessing oil quality, and evaluating filter conditions.
  • Monitor plant equipment, gauges, meters, and control panels to ensure proper treatment process function.
  • Understand and perform duties involving system process flows and shutdown requirements, as appropriate.
  • Learn lift station locations and protocols for performing SCADA station operation and maintenance checks.
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) software to maintain accurate maintenance records and assist in preparing equipment condition reports.
  • Complete minor adjustments, cleaning, and tightening of accessible fasteners on equipment.
  • Collaborate with plant personnel and external service providers to ensure efficient operations and maintenance.
  • Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols including, but not limited to, Confined Space and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, City and department policies and procedures, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Operate hand tools to mid-size, complex equipment; observe all safety guidelines established by the City of Denton.
  • Maintain thorough logs and records according to regulatory agency requirements.
  • Work overtime and respond to after-hour emergencies, as needed.
