About The Position

We are SLR Consulting (Canada), an 800+ team of advisory, environmental/engineering, and regulatory professionals across Canada. We deliver services through the integration of over 30 disciplines to help clients address some of their most complex challenges around sustainability. We are Making Sustainability Happen. As our new Water Quality Technician, you will play an important role with our current team working on projects across the Northwest Territories, including mine sites. You’ll help leading complex fieldwork and learn to manage projects, for a variety of programs related to the assessment, monitoring, management, reclamation, and remediation of contaminated sites. Role Working closely with other team members, you’ll support the surface water quality sampling programs, manage large datasets, and work on the preparation of field notes and environmental summary reports for work conducted across NWT and other locations as needed. Your role will be a balance of field and office work, with opportunities to develop your project management skills, mentor junior staff, collaborate with coworkers across Canada, and grow SLR’s presence in the region.

Requirements

  • Ability to work longer hours during NWT open water season (Spring, Summer, and early Fall), based in Yellowknife, coupled with potential travel to locations outside of Yellowknife and across Western Canada to assist and complete environmental work
  • Ideally 4+ years of experience in the environmental consulting industry, with proven experience of work at large mining facilities
  • Familiarity with groundwater and surface water quality sampling and monitoring
  • Familiarity with electronic entry of field data and use of EQuIS Collect, Field Maps and Survey123. Experience managing large datasets using EQuIS databases and various modules is a valued asset.
  • Experience leading and managing large field programs.
  • Experience working with large datasets (data collection, interpretation, and reporting)
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 platform, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. A proven ability in technical writing is an asset
  • Familiar with project management concepts, tools, and controls.
  • Demonstrated experience writing proposals and developing new business with clients is an asset
  • Work well independently including ability to work alone in remote locations, including Northern Canada, and adapt to conditions/resources
  • Experience in other environmental consulting services (i.e. hydrogeology, contaminated sites, risk assessment, hazardous building materials assessment) is an asset
  • Degree or a technical diploma in environmental science, engineering, or related studies
  • Strong commitment to Occupational Health and Safety
  • Valid driver’s license required for travel to job sites/clients

  • Experience operating small drones is an asset
  • A proven ability in technical writing is an asset
  • Demonstrated experience writing proposals and developing new business with clients is an asset
  • Experience in other environmental consulting services (i.e. hydrogeology, contaminated sites, risk assessment, hazardous building materials assessment) is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Surface water quality monitoring and sampling, including open channel flow monitoring
  • Deep multiport groundwater sampling using the Westbay sampling system.
  • Shallow groundwater monitoring and sampling using a variety of techniques and equipment including, purge/resample, low flow using Waterra Hydrolift pump or peristaltic pumps
  • Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting field equipment, field probes, and pumps
  • Collecting field data using handheld tablets and various programs including EQuIS Collect, field maps and Survey123. Experience operating small drones is an asset
  • Sampling mine drainage, sump, tailings pond, settling pond and polishing ponds
  • Aquatics effects monitoring, including acute and sublethal toxicity testing (Acute Pass/Fail, Acute Multiconcentration and Sublethal Multiconcentration)
  • Fieldwork Quality Control sampling and Data Quality Management
  • Effectively oversee project tasks to manage technical groups and technical programs, including all facets of project delivery
  • Working with multiple levels of government and various departments including the federal and territorial government and the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Boards
  • Communicate directly with clients to maintain the highest levels of customer satisfaction
  • All aspects of Occupational and Health and Safety including executing internal SLR and client policies and procedures
