About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for the position of Water Quality Supervisor within the Office of Public Utilities, Division of General Supt Water Treatment. This role is based at the CWLP FILTER PLANT in Springfield, Illinois. The Water Quality Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing daily laboratory and operational activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, conducting water quality testing, and providing staff training and development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, chemistry, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of responsible experience in analytical chemistry.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing food, beverage, drug, and agricultural product standards.
  • Ability to work overtime during plant emergencies or operational disruptions.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in statistics is desirable.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
  • Current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position to be eligible to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily laboratory and operational activities, including assigning, scheduling, evaluating staff work, and overseeing water treatment adjustments to ensure optimal purification processes.
  • Prepare required regulatory reports and ensures compliance with IEPA and IDPH standards for potable water, laboratory procedures, and plant operations.
  • Conduct and oversee chemical and microbiological testing of drinking water sources and distribution systems to ensure compliance and determine appropriate treatment actions.
  • Provide staff training and development while evaluating and improving laboratory methods, procedures, equipment, and adopting new scientific practices and regulatory requirements.
