About The Position

The Water Quality Operator serves as the Chief Operator/Operator of Record of multiple small water and wastewater systems. The Water Quality Operator works independently, has some contact with customers, and has specifically assigned duties and responsibilities that require licensing and experience. The successful candidate will be assigned a company truck and necessary tools, will use the truck for transportation between home and designated worksites only, will work primarily in the field, report onsite to the Malone Plant, and participate in an on-call rotation.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Excel), SCADA, and HACH WIMS.
  • Knowledge of/familiarity with MS Word, Computerized Maintenance Management System software, GIS/GPS, and other relevant software.
  • Knowledge of NYS water and wastewater regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and professionally.
  • Strong skills in plumbing, electrical and carpentry work, with hands-on skills in maintenance and repairs.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting system design drawings and technical schematics.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, walk long distances in snow and muddy conditions, climb ladders and slopes to access work sites.
  • Demonstrates strong judgement, critical thinking, and effective decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage, adjust and prioritize a varied workload based on such factors as work objectives and business needs.
  • Must meet the training certification requirements for confined space entrant, confined space attendant, and confined space rescue in accordance with the Authority Health and Safety Manual.
  • New York State Department of Environmental Conservation 2/2A wastewater certification required.
  • Five years direct related experience in water/wastewater treatment operations.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be acceptable.

  • Minimum Driver’s License: Class D NYS regular operator.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional education or certifications relevant to the position, such as vocational or training in mechanical, electrical, or water treatment operations is preferred.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or other related discipline is preferred.
  • New York State Department of Health C, D, and/or IIA/B Water licenses preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Chief Operator of multiple small to medium water/wastewater treatment and distribution/collection systems.
  • Perform daily operations, conduct water and wastewater testing, data input, meter readings or repairs, service installations or disconnections, pump and pump station maintenance or repair.
  • Provide support as the backup Operator of Record for systems of medium to high complexity and sized systems, ensuring seamless operation and management in the primary operator’s absence.
  • Respond to requests from municipal customers to perform tasks such as investigating troubles, water turn-off/on requests, sewer pump station issues, etc.
  • Develop and generate reports and memos for regulatory compliance and customer communication, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery of all required documentation.
  • Utilize Authority SCADA, GIS, Computerized Maintenance Management, and HACH WIMs systems to support operational and maintenance activities.
  • Review and update of data and Standard Operating Procedures for assigned systems.
  • Manage and respond to on-call duties as assigned, ensuring prompt attention to emergencies, urgent issues, or unexpected situations outside of regular working hours. This includes being available for immediate contact and intervention as needed, coordinating with relevant team members, and documenting all on-call activities and resolutions.
  • Perform related duties to support the overall operations and objectives of the Authority.
