About The Position

The Water Plant Operations Technician position provides operation, maintenance, inspection, and service to the City of Wausau’s Drinking Water Treatment Facility and water distribution systems, performing a variety of maintenance/testing on mechanical/electrical treatment process to achieve maximum operating efficiencies for a safe drinking water supply.

Requirements

Associate degree in an Industrial Mechanical or Electrical Mechanical field or a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a relatable maintenance field, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Wisconsin Driver's License.
Knowledge of safe and efficient operation of conventional and specialized large and small vehicles and construction equipment typically used in a municipal public works department.
Knowledge of and ability to use appropriate PPE for working with hazardous chemicals and electrical equipment.
Knowledge of the proper methods, tools, materials, and equipment used for the repair and maintenance of water treatment processes and distribution systems, street pavements and sewer/structures.
Knowledge of tools and instruments used in the fabrication, installation, diagnostics, programming, and repair of electrical and electrical mechanical equipment.
Considerable knowledge of trouble shooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical and pneumatic equipment, pumps, and related equipment used in the operation of the Water Plant.
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the mechanical trades.
Ability to comprehend information in software documentation in order to maintain monitoring, control, and reporting systems.
Ability to work from plans, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.
Skill in locating and repairing defects in electrical systems and equipment.
Ability to detect operating trouble and locate and adjust defects in mechanical equipment and systems.
Ability to fabricate a variety of metals and pipe in the repair and improvement of the system.
Thorough knowledge of Water Plant chemical and bacteriological testing methods and procedures.
Knowledge of intermediate chemistry and the chemical compatibility of materials.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, at times under unfavorable weather conditions.
Ability to use a PC for work related job duties, including word processing, spreadsheets, and email.
Ability to problem solve, communicate effectively, and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and other employees.
Availability to be on 24-hour call and respond to emergencies.
Must be able to report to job within a reasonable time in such instances.

Nice To Haves

Education and/or experience with computers, SCADA, process and control, pneumatic systems, electrical and mechanical systems, laboratory, and reporting.
Progressively increasing experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment, automotive equipment, and working knowledge of automated process control systems including software applications.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Journeyman Electrician License or Industrial Journeyman Electrician License issued by the State of Wisconsin.

Responsibilities

Troubleshoots, installs, replaces, and repairs mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic system equipment for the drinking water treatment facility and distribution system.
Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles pumps, air compressors, chemical feed equipment, electrical motors, generators and other equipment.
Responds to process control outages and resolves alarm conditions, remedies and repairs issues.
Operates and maintains water treatment facilities to comply with all EPA and WDNR regulations and water quality standards.
Performs Standby as assigned to assure plant operations are sustained.
Operates and maintains supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system and equipment
Maintains, repairs, and/or coordinates repair for PLC’s, HMI’s, motor control centers, automated process control systems, remote telemeter monitoring systems, and process control software.
Oversees contractors ensure their work is performed correctly and safely.
Responds to customer inquiries and communicates directly to customers.
Performs chemical and bacteriological tests on raw and treated water.
Draws samples for quality control and compliance monitoring.
Performs tasks of the Water Plant Operator
Performs other tasks and projects as assigned by the Water Superintendent or his/her designee.
