About The Position

This is an internal-only position open to current members of the Town of Bridgewater AFSCME union. The Water Handler, within the DPW – Water Division, is responsible for operating and repairing chemical pumps and motors, ensuring their cleanliness and operational status. The role involves safe handling of water treatment chemicals, performing maintenance at Water Treatment Plants and Pump Houses, and maintaining the cleanliness of these facilities and Water Towers. Additional duties include performing tasks as assigned by the Water Superintendent, and obtaining required license certifications as the Board of Water Registrars updates Town requirements.

Requirements

  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License
  • Must obtain a Grade 1-OIT license within 90 days of hire.
  • Grade 1-T in full license must be obtained within 14 months of date that the requisite Grade 1-OIT license was awarded.
  • High school diploma, trade school education, or equivalent training and experience.
  • Knowledge of water treatment operations, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Skill in operating, maintaining, and repairing pumps, motors, and related systems.
  • Ability to handle chemicals safely, perform physical labor, and work as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow instructions, maintain records, and meet licensing requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Employees are encouraged to seek their Grade 2-T license.
  • If the Town's Water System is upgraded, must obtain a license as the system is rated.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and repair chemical pumps and motors of all kinds.
  • Maintain chemical pumps and motors in a clean and fully operational condition.
  • Handle water treatment chemicals safely.
  • Perform maintenance at all Water Treatment Plants and Pump Houses.
  • Keep all Water Treatment Plants, Pump Houses, and Water Towers clean, both inside and out.
  • Perform other duties within the Water Department as needed.
  • Upgrade license certification as required if the Board of Water Registrars updates the Town’s certification requirements.
  • Perform all tasks as assigned or required by the Water Superintendent.
