About The Position

The Water Exercise Instructor at the Pete White Wellness Center (YMCA) is responsible for leading all instructional water exercise classes while ensuring the safety of all participants. This role requires mental alertness to dangerous situations, physical ability to demonstrate exercises and assist in emergencies, and the capacity to communicate effectively. The instructor will work with their supervisor to develop safe and challenging classes, promote the program, and maintain current certifications. They are also responsible for teaching assigned classes, finding substitutes when necessary, assisting lifeguards in emergencies, managing equipment, attending meetings and trainings, and fostering positive relationships with members and the public.

Requirements

  • Certified in PR/CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid (Training provided by the Y, if needed).
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Show technical ability in water fitness.
  • Possess a cooperative spirit committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect and responsibility to staff, lay leaders, Y members, program participants and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to all instructional water exercise classes.
  • Maintain the safety of all program participants.
  • Demonstrate exercises and assist the lifeguard in an emergency.
  • See, hear, and project voice across distances.
  • Move to various locations, including in and around the swimming pool.
  • Stand for extended lengths of time.
  • Handle irate, complaining, or demanding individuals without internalizing or personalizing comments.
  • Work with supervisor in development of a safe and challenging water exercise class.
  • Understand YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City policies and follow guidelines.
  • Promote the water exercise classes to members, program participants and the public.
  • Keep certifications current.
  • Teach all assigned classes.
  • Notify supervisor if unable to teach assigned class and find appropriate substitute.
  • Aid lifeguard in the event of an emergency.
  • Get out and return any equipment used in class.
  • Attend appropriate staff meetings and trainings.
  • Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members, donors, and volunteers.
