About The Position

The City of Frostburg is seeking applicants for the position of Laborer/Motor Equipment Operator (MEO) in the Water Department. Both entry-level and experienced applicants will be considered for this position. CDL and experience with underground utility construction and maintenance, and/or equipment operating experience is preferred. Applicants without CDLs must have a clean driving record and be able to obtain a CDL within six months. The duties of the position are assigned by the Water Department Supervisor and may include nights, weekends, and holidays due to emergencies. This position involves primarily outdoor work and regular exposure to varying weather conditions. Requirements

  • HS diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Current Driver License
  • CDL (must be obtained within six months of being hired)
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Perform heavy manual tasks for extended period of time
  • Proficient at operation of heavy equipment, power tools, and hand tools
  • Ability to walk, climb, kneel and stoop
  • Able and willing to learn a variety of unskilled and skilled labor tasks for job progression
  • Ability to effectively communicate using written and oral English language
  • Clean driving record

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain a variety of light to heavy equipment, including backhoes, dump trucks, skid steers, and other vehicles and machinery used in water system maintenance and repair.
  • Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of water lines, hydrants, meters, valves, and other components of the water distribution system.
  • Assist in the excavation and backfilling of trenches for water line repairs and replacements.
  • Clean and clear debris from water system components, including valves, meters, and fire hydrants.
  • Assist with the flushing, chlorination, and maintenance of water mains as directed.
  • Monitor water pressure and flow, and assist with leak detection and repair.
  • Respond to emergency water service interruptions or breaks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment maintenance, and water system issues.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Work effectively in a team environment while taking direction from supervisors and senior staff.
  • Participate in overtime as required, particularly for emergency repairs or maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Water Department Supervisor.
