About The Position

Assist the Wastewater/Water Operations staff in fulfilling daily work duties. This position will perform fundamental maintenance tasks while learning semi-skilled tasks for the day-to-day operations & maintenance of the City’s wastewater and/or water facilities. The position will also include participation in routine training opportunities that will build knowledge of wastewater and/or water operations, methods and standards as well as specialized work and safety training.

Requirements

  • Safe work practices and procedures.

  • Safe use of hand tools and power tools.
  • Operating principles of valves, pumps and motors.
  • Safely and effectively perform basic operations and maintenance functions related to wastewater/water plant equipment
  • Learn semi-skilled and skilled wastewater/water operations and maintenance procedures.
  • Read and interpret gauges and other recording devices
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, reports and charts
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, eye and hearing protection, respirators, uniforms, steel toed boots, hard hat, etc.
  • Be exposed to chemicals, dust, bacteria, odors and sewage
  • Drive a City vehicle in a safe and professional manner
  • Grasp with right and left hands
  • Use fine hand manipulation
  • Climb ladders to heights of over 30 feet
  • Perform physical tasks involving frequent bending, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of weights up to 50 pounds
  • Hear and distinguish various sounds, such as abnormal equipment sounds, voices of co-workers in noisy environments, pager, cell phone, etc.
  • Maintain good public relations with people contacted during work assignments
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
  • Work shifts that may include holidays and weekends
  • High School or GED Graduate
  • Previous education or work experience in working with pumps, motors, and other mechanical equipment
  • Possess a valid California Class C license and a safe driving record

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Wastewater/Water Division with a wide variety of preventative maintenance work and mechanical repair in connection with the repair and upkeep of the wastewater or water facilities
  • Lubricating pumps and other technical apparatus for proper operation
  • Assisting operators with various electrical motor and auxiliary engine maintenance.
  • Assisting maintenance personnel in a wide variety of mechanical related tasks
  • Assisting operators with reservoir, water storage tank cleaning and facility inspections.
  • Prepping and painting a variety of equipment and facilities
  • Assisting operators with source water intake and fish ladder maintenance.
  • Performing building maintenance and grounds maintenance
  • Operating a variety of equipment, including hand and power tools, as well as City vehicles
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate operation and maintenance records
  • Performing related duties similar to the above in the scope and function required
