About The Position

To perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance activities on wastewater facilities; to operate and maintain a wide variety of maintenance tools and equipment; and to perform a variety of maintenance duties relative to assigned area of responsibility. The Wastewater Utility Worker I is an entry-level position performing routine tasks and less complex maintenance, often serving as a training role. The Wastewater Utility Worker II is a full journey-level position capable of performing the full range of duties with general supervision, typically filled by advancement from the I level or with prior experience.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license by date of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid C.P.R. certificate when assigned to water or wastewater treatment plant.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid First Aid certificate when assigned to water or wastewater treatment plant.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Class B driver's license.
  • Wastewater Utility Worker I: One year of maintenance experience related to area of assignment is desirable.
  • Wastewater Utility Worker II: Two years of maintenance experience within the area of assignment, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of general maintenance and repair related to vehicles and wastewater maintenance.
  • Knowledge of operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the maintenance of City vehicles and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of mechanical repair and preventive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of shop tools and automotive maintenance equipment used in repairs.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of wastewater operations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Ability to learn operation and repair characteristics of a wide variety of vehicles, equipment, pipes and facilities used in the City.
  • Ability to learn to utilize tools, equipment and procedures used in the welding and fabrication of vehicles, equipment, pipes and facilities.
  • Ability to learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled welding and fabrication activities.
  • Ability to learn to systematically perform preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain wastewater facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret gauges and other recording devices related to wastewater operations.
  • Ability to take samples and perform routine laboratory tests.
  • Ability to attend and complete confined space entry training.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Wastewater Utility Worker II: Ability to perform a variety of journey level maintenance and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  • Wastewater Utility Worker II: Ability to handle a variety of water treatment chemicals including chlorine in a safe and effective manner.
  • Wastewater Utility Worker II: Ability to operate equipment within assigned area.
  • Wastewater Utility Worker II: Ability to work independently without supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Operate assigned equipment and vehicles; perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Conduct traffic control when working in high traffic areas of the City; install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of maintenance or repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries and questions from the public.
  • May assist in performing other maintenance work as assigned.
  • Attend safety and training sessions and seminars.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled welding to fabricate tools and parts in support of the repair of assigned City vehicles, equipment and facilities.
  • Monitor, maintain and repair lift station; ensure proper working condition; maintain and repair pump stations, sewer lines, control valves, gauges, dials, graphs and other instrumentation.
  • Clean wastewater collection system; operate vactor truck to flush collection system and vacuum debris; open clogs in lines; clean manholes, wet wells and lift stations.
  • Maintain, compile and update operational logs and reports; perform and record mathematical calculations related to assigned operational activities.
  • Perform confined space entry duties; clean pumps, motors, feeders and other equipment to maintain appropriate plant operations.
  • Respond to emergency calls from the public and other divisions and/or agencies as required.
  • Perform on-call and weekend worker duties as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
