Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Up to one year of mechanical or maintenance experience (for Operator Trainee)
  • 1–2 years of related experience (for Operator I)
  • 5–10 years of wastewater treatment plant experience, depending on level (for Operator II–IV)
  • Associate’s Degree preferred (for Operator II–IV)
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License required
  • Must obtain a CDL within 12 months of hire
  • Must be able to perform medium physical work
  • Must be able to work in outdoor environments with potential exposure to chemicals, noise, and weather conditions
  • Must obtain Grade II Wastewater Operator Certification within two years of hire (for Operator Trainee)
  • Must obtain Grade II Wastewater Operator Certification within 18 months of employment (for Operator I)
  • Requires corresponding Grade II, III, or IV Wastewater Operator Certification (for Operator II–IV)

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree preferred (for Operator II–IV)

Responsibilities

  • Performs entry-level work in wastewater treatment plant operations, maintenance, and laboratory testing.
  • Assists certified operators with process adjustments, data collection, and plant monitoring.
  • Performs operational, laboratory, and maintenance duties to ensure proper plant performance.
  • Makes process adjustments, collects samples, and records operating data.
  • Performs advanced plant operations, laboratory testing, and process control to maintain compliance.
  • Responsible for plant adjustments, chemical monitoring, and maintaining equipment and records.
  • May also supervise staff, oversee compliance documentation, and coordinate maintenance schedules.
