As a Wastewater System Technician II, you have a unique opportunity to change lives through exceptional service. In this role you will perform routine to difficult technical work in the maintenance of the wastewater collection system and easement network for Cary. This work is vital in maintaining 1,000 plus miles of sanitary sewer lines, 26K manholes, utility easements and 270 miles of storm water pipe including catch basins. This technician will perform significant work mowing and clearing easements. The position is also responsible for performing repairs, acoustic testing on sanitary sewer mains, cleaning sanitary sewer main lines with straight jet, tag along trailer jet, and jet vacuum combination trucks. Team members are expected to be cross-trained and work in all areas within the scope of wastewater system work. A Wastewater System Technician II works more independently than a Technician I, leads a crew of two staff members on daily tasks, and may have specialized responsibilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Wastewater Collections Team Leader. Our ideal candidate is experienced in tree cutting and equipment operation, including skid steers and tractors. The candidate will be flexible, self-motivated, and willing to take initiative to complete wastewater system maintenance and repairs. Most importantly, the individual will take pride in their accomplishments and the difference they make in the Cary community. Candidates must be willing to perform “on-call” after hours standby duty on a rotating basis where they will respond to sanitary sewer spills (SSO’s) as well as blockages on sewer lines. Employees are key members of the Adverse Weather Response team assisting in necessary tasks during or following weather events. They may also assist with seasonal leaf collection, as needed.

Graduation from high school with considerable work in wastewater collection systems maintenance and equipment operation
For those employees assigned to easement maintenance, considerable experience in tree felling and cutting is required
A valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record
Possession of an appropriate valid class “A” CDL, with a tanker endorsement, or ability to obtain within six months, and acceptable driving record
Grade II in Wastewater Collection Certification is required, or ability to obtain within 1 year
National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100 and ICS 700 training/certification required (provided)

Responsibilities

Participates in a comprehensive sewer line maintenance program keeping sewer lines open and working properly
Carries out preventative maintenance program
Operates jet-vac truck to clean storm drains and to clean commercial sewer lines identified from acoustic testing
Facilitates easement maintenance to include mowing; inspecting easements and manholes; flagging easements for mowing; and delivery of letters for notification of easement cutting
Uses acoustic testing equipment to determine commercial sewer line cleaning needs
Locates manholes and flags easement boundaries
inspects material to be cut and determines if it is cut by town staff or contractors
Locates and inspects manholes for inflow and infiltration issues
creates database of inflow and infiltration issues and GPS manhole locations
Works with contractors videoing lines
finds access points for contractors
Addresses questions from the public
Operates specialized TV equipment to monitor the condition of lines
works with ArcGis for line locations and documentation of work completed
cameras lines for final inspection
Installs and programs flow meters in confined spaces
Smoke tests lines to identify problem areas
Samples and monitors wastewater discharge
Maps lines and maintains files
Comprehensive knowledge of jet truck operation to cut roots and flush lines
Performs maintenance on equipment
Reads industrial meters
Maintains storm drains and keeps clear of debris
Replaces broken storm drain lids
prepares area around broken drains that cannot be immediately fixed
Repairs sewer clean-outs
Responds to sewer calls
unstops blockages using tape or jet depending on nature of the blockage
applies de-greasing chemicals
Responds to sewer spills
builds dams and takes action to contain spill
cleans up spills
pumps sewage if necessary
applies lime, soil, etc. as necessary
Responds to sewer odor calls
checks manholes for blockages and talks to homeowners
Performs rotating “on-call” after hours standby duty
Operates equipment during snow and inclement weather conditions
Performs other job-related tasks as required
