About The Position

Under close supervision, assists with performing a variety of skilled work tasks in the operation, maintenance and repair of the City’s Water & Wastewater Infrastructure and systems. As the Wastewater Apprentice, you will: Assist and operate specialized equipment, machines, and vehicles to install, clean, maintain, and repair water lines, fixtures, and equipment. Assist and install, adjust, and test flow, sampling, and metering equipment. Assist in monitor water wells, test water chlorine, and collect/record daily meter readings. Assist in maintenance and monitoring booster station, pump, chlorinator, generator, pressure tanks, and related equipment. Assist with collecting, label, and document water samples for laboratory testing and perform simple test on water. Assist with installing water meters and fire hydrants. Assist with the operation, maintenance and control of wastewater treatment plant including the operation of valves, gates, pumps and machinery. Assist with ensuring treatment plant operations are performed in accordance with quality standards, and safety regulations and procedures; and that they meet Local, State and Federal regulations pertaining to treatment of sanitary wastewater. Assist with sampling (Jar test) the influent and effluent at various stages of processing and identify problems and ensuring proper and efficient operation of the treatment plant. Assist with observing variations in operating conditions, interpreting meter and gauge readings, and reporting abnormalities to Supervisor/Chief Operator. Assist senior level operators and mechanics to resolve operational problems. Assist with conducting basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting. Assist with cleaning and maintaining plant work areas, tools and equipment and collect samples as instructed. Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • A valid Arizona driver’s license at the time of appointment
  • Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis

Nice To Haves

  • Commercial license (A or B)
  • Backhoe and/or electrical experience
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • San Luis residency
