About The Position

This job posting outlines multiple levels within the Wastewater Operator series, from Apprentice to Operator A. The core purpose of these roles is to operate and maintain water/wastewater treatment equipment and facilities in compliance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) issued permits. Responsibilities include monitoring treatment processes, adjusting chemical and physical processes, maintaining logs and records, and performing general plant and systems maintenance. The level of supervision and autonomy increases with each higher operator level.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Weekend, holiday, and afterhours work may be required, as well as after-hours response and emergencies.
  • Valid State of Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Class A CDL with air brake endorsement preferred but not required for employment (Apprentice).
  • Must obtain a state FDEP “C” license in wastewater plant operations within two years from date of hire (Apprentice).
  • Formal training, special courses, or self-educated equivalent to satisfying completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in the Wastewater field (Levels C, B, A).
  • Must live within a 20-mile radius of the city limits of Leesburg within six (6) months of employment due to on-call rotation requirement (Levels C, B, A).
  • 2080 hours of experience in wastewater treatment (Operator C).
  • Must possess a valid FDEP “C” license in Wastewater Plant Operations (Operator C).
  • 6240 hours of experience in wastewater treatment (Operator B).
  • Must possess a valid FDEP “B” license in Wastewater (Operator B).
  • 10,400 hours of experience in wastewater treatment (Operator A).
  • Must possess a valid FDEP “A” license in Wastewater (Operator A).

Nice To Haves

  • Class A CDL with air brake endorsement preferred but not required for employment (Apprentice).

Responsibilities

  • Monitor water/wastewater treatment processes, including the operation of chemical and physical processes.
  • Monitor and operate SCADA control systems.
  • Calibrate equipment and measure/record parameters.
  • Dispatch service crews and coordinate job efforts using the city radio system.
  • Adjust chemical or physical processes to standards based on measurements and indications.
  • Generate daily operational reports.
  • Perform maintenance on water/wastewater treatment systems and plant equipment.
  • Assist with or perform general cleanup of facilities.
  • Respond to public complaints, resolve issues, or refer to a supervisor.
  • Monitor and order chemicals and other necessary supplies.
  • Maintain logs and records as required.
  • Perform routine office or plant tasks such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, copying, and maintaining logs and records.
  • Mentor and assist in training of lesser experienced Operations staff (Operator B and above).
  • Maintain compliance using experience and best management practices.
