About The Position

The Wastewater Operator Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, operation, and inspection of assigned facility processes, structures, compressor stations, and utility areas such as water, air, and nitrogen. This role involves assembling, installing, and repairing equipment and machinery, performing routine tank or vessel cleaning, and conducting minor mechanical, plumbing, and pump repairs of utility systems. The operator will use a variety of hand and power tools, and may collaborate with other craft workers. Responsibilities include operating forklifts, skid loaders, and vehicles for facility maintenance, monitoring and adjusting equipment using manual and automated controls (PLC, DCS, SCADA), and performing hands-on troubleshooting and repairs. The role requires observing and recording readings from gauges, meters, and charts, performing sampling and testing for quality control, and maintaining operating logs for regulatory compliance. The operator will report process deviations, variances, and inventory levels, interact with staff, agencies, vendors, and contractors, and notify supervision of needed attention or repairs. Additionally, the role involves monitoring and maintaining spare parts and chemical inventory, and ensuring current training or certifications are maintained.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
Specific training in plant utilities
Demonstrated understanding of basic math and written/oral communication
Able to read blueprints, schematics, and diagrams (when applicable)
Work safely under general supervision
Follow written procedures and verbal instructions
Perform journey-level work
Manage time to complete assignments
Computer experience including email, payroll time entry, and online training
At least two (2) years' experience in a technical field
US Citizen
Possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver's license and demonstrate a good driving record
Pass a post-offer, pre-placement drug test, physical examination, and medical history check
Pass a pre-employment criminal background check and have a clean motor vehicle report (MVR)
Good attendance, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team
Ability to follow oral/written instructions and exercise good judgment to complete assignments on time
Assist others by training/mentoring, teamwork, troubleshooting repairs, and installing new equipment
Escort and monitor work performed by outside vendors in accordance with facility requirements
Complete and return required administrative paperwork as directed
Must wear proper PPE as required and ensure PPE is in acceptable condition
Keep office space, operating area, control room, mechanical room, warehouse etc. clean and orderly
Attend all safety meetings, participate in ES&H/ISM program activities, and stay current with assigned required training

Nice To Haves

Associate Degree or higher in specialized technology applicable to water treatment facility
Safety training equivalent to OSHA 10
Knowledge of equipment and types of chemicals used in water treatment
Five years journeyman level experience in a relevant field or equivalent experience in a commercial or industrial facility
Broad knowledge of other disciplines
Proficiency with Microsoft products
Proficiency with Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
Familiar with laboratory operations

Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance: Monitor processes, analyze operational data, correct problems to maintain compliance, document information, and communicate problems.
Safety: Be proficient with WPP, LOTO, chemical and environmental contaminants or hazards, confined space rescue, fall protection, hazardous materials, and hazardous communication.
Physical Plant Operations: Perform all activities associated with wastewater, plant air, nitrogen, and reverse osmosis systems, equipment cleaning, and facility housekeeping.
Equipment Operation: Understand process flows, water chemistry, machine controls, automation, processes, and manual equipment operation. Know the location and isolation methods of all associated processes, over pressure safety devices, utilities, and infrastructure.
Equipment Maintenance: Complete scheduled PMs, install and maintain equipment and facilities, and maintain associated supplies, parts, and tools inventory.
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested to ensure timely project execution.
