About The Position

This role involves maintaining and operating the City’s wastewater treatment plant system in a safe, effective, and efficient manner. The operator will utilize technical expertise, practices, and servicing for plant equipment, lift stations, laboratory techniques, and safety procedures. The position requires the ability to be scheduled for "on-call" rotation and may involve working hours other than the regular daytime schedule, including shift work, on-call duties, and emergency response situations. Both levels require the ability to wear city-provided uniforms and personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or its equivalent.
  • Some work experience in wastewater treatment operations or equivalent combination of work experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities (WWTO I).
  • Minimum of two years work experience in wastewater treatment profession or technical training (WWTO II).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to operate construction equipment such as backhoe, chainsaw, shovel, two-way radio, cell phone, computer, measuring devices, meters (pH, Dissolved O2, Chlorine).
  • Skill in wastewater treatment operations, regulatory requirements and effective management.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate licenses and certificates.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in operating assigned equipment, tools, and vehicles safely.
  • Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as shift work, on call, or emergency response situations.
  • Skill and ability to analyze and prioritize multiple tasks using effective reasoning in a timely manner, analyze situations and adopt quick, effective reasonable courses of action.
  • Ability to write reports and perform complex mathematical calculations.
  • Must be able to wear city provided uniform and city issued personal protective equipment - steel-toed leather boots, steel-toed rubber boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision (WWTO II).
  • Ability to balance time pressures, emergency situations, irregular schedules with overtime, frequent change of tasks (WWTO II).

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Texas Driver’s License or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid Texas Class B CDL or the ability to obtain within 6 months of the hire date.
  • TCEQ "D" wastewater at the time of hire or 9 months after hire date (WWTO I).
  • Basic first aid certificate or the ability to obtain one within 9 months of the hire date (WWTO I).
  • Three or more years experience in wastewater treatment profession (WWTO II).
  • TCEQ “C” Wastewater Treatment License (WWTO II).
  • TCEQ “C” Water Distribution License (WWTO II).
  • Basic first aid certificate or the ability to obtain one within 9 months of the hire date and must maintain appropriate licenses and certificates (WWTO II).

Responsibilities

  • Conducts routine tests and instrument readings at regular intervals and records data.
  • Calibrates and monitors plant equipment daily and records data.
  • Cleans and maintains filters, blowers, pumps, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains other related plant facilities and grounds.
  • Collects samples for analysis and records data.
  • Performs calculations and prepares written reports.
  • Subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations including on call rotation and special events.
  • Assists with inspection, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing equipment and systems and coordinates work with engineers, contractors, and other crafts (WWTO I).
  • Assists with evaluating the operation, maintenance and repair of the plant, makes changes in flows and processes, and/or reports potential or actual problems with recommended solutions and other appropriate actions (WWTO I).
  • Coordinates the testing and start-up of new process units, control systems or equipment (WWTO II).
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs equipment and systems and coordinates work with engineers, contractors, and other crafts (WWTO II).
  • Evaluates the operation, maintenance and repair of the plant, makes changes in flows and processes, and/or reports potential or actual problems with recommended solutions and other appropriate actions (WWTO II).
  • Subject to working shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and standby (WWTO II).
