This position assists with planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating activities occurring at the nursing station by performing clerical or receptionist duties and maintaining the physical environment. The Ward Clerk respects the confidentiality of patient, hospital, and physician-related information, participates in Quality Improvement, and independently utilizes reference materials as necessary. They collect and document patient data correctly, notify appropriate nursing personnel of patient needs/requests, and confer with nursing personnel regarding the scheduling of patient tests and activities. The Ward Clerk processes STAT orders immediately and notifies the team leader/charge nurse and other involved departments, and processes physician orders accurately and in a timely manner. They assist in admission, transfer, and discharges to provide for a smooth work flow, and assist patients, visitors, and nursing staff as needed and/or directed in a courteous manner. The Ward Clerk competently performs Ward Clerk clerical skills, promotes good public relations for the nursing department/hospital, and utilizes basic problem-solving skills to prevent or resolve problems. They act as the focus of communications at the nursing station regarding patient care activities and patient location, and are able to provide information and direction regarding the same. Additionally, they initiate and maintain an up-to-date patient kardex and maintain the patient charge in appropriate and functional order, preparing and transferring the chart following death or discharge.
