About The Position

The Water and Wastewater Leadhand is a working hands-on position which reports to the Water and Wastewater Foreperson supporting the Utilities Department through the work of the Transmission Branch. The required work may be performed under minimal supervision, the Leadhand acts as intermediaries between the employees and the Foreperson. The Leadhand is responsible for their team’s ability to meet productivity goals and adhere to safety procedures and policies assigned by the Foreperson.

Requirements

  • Alberta Environment Operator Certification, completion of Distribution Level II, Wastewater Collection Level II and Wastewater Treatment Level I, must be actively working towards Distribution Level III and Wastewater Collection Level III
  • Two or more years of experience in the water and wastewater field
  • Knowledge of confined space entry procedures along with the County and Occupational Health and Safety policies
  • Working knowledge of SCADA Control Systems, Vueworks, GIS, Collector, AUPE Collective Agreement, and Strathcona County Water and Wastewater Bylaws
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills while performing the assigned duties and planning for upcoming work
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently with limited supervision
  • Capable of undertaking tasks that are labour intensive requiring physical capability
  • Capable of working with both indoor and outside settings in all weather conditions
  • Submission of a Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Foreperson by planning the activities of a work crew to meet the daily work requirements for maintenance and inspections of water, wastewater, and storm systems
  • Monitor performance of the work crew reporting to this position to undertake and complete mid and end of season performance appraisals
  • Mentor and support work crews by actively training formal procedures, safe work practices and operation of systems along with informal mentorship of all team members
  • Monitor safety and performance of contractors working for Strathcona County Utilities
  • Monitor operating parameters with water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including the collection of water samples and compliance within Alberta Environment’s codes of practice
  • Conduct daily tailgate meetings when fulfilling a Foreperson role with work crew to review issues and concerns, while training them in standard operating procedures, hazard assessments and safety policies
  • Request work orders for unscheduled work and document details on daily force account sheets
  • Schedule, initiate and maintain data collection associated with specific programs
  • Maintain excellent public relations and on-site communication with residents, the general public, other departments and personnel as well as contractors involved with daily work activities
  • Provides Foreperson and/or Supervisors with status updates as required/requested
  • Provide input to actively improve preventative maintenance activities and procedures
  • Participate in developing, reviewing and maintaining applicable standard operating procedures and hazard assessments
  • Provide coverage for the W&WW Foreperson duties as required
  • Participate in On-Call coverage and responsibilities
  • Respond to emergency infrastructure failures to minimize damage and ensure public safety
  • Maintain the highest levels of safety and environmental consideration to perform all tasks
