Job Overview: The Vice President of Treasury and Tax is a senior executive responsible for leading and directing all treasury, cash management, and tax functions across the organization. Reporting directly to the CFO, this leader will serve as a trusted financial partner in overseeing capital structure, liquidity management, investment activity, risk management, and the full spectrum of federal, state, and local tax obligations for a publicly traded, multi-state retail enterprise that also encompasses distribution and manufacturing operations. This role requires deep technical expertise combined with strong executive leadership capabilities and the ability to operate at the intersection of strategic finance and regulatory compliance. The VP of Treasury and Tax will lead a high-performing team, partner closely with the CFO and broader C-suite, and interface with the Board of Directors, external auditors, banks, rating agencies, and tax advisors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field required
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in treasury, tax, and/or corporate finance, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
  • Proven track record managing large-scale cash collection operations and store-level treasury processes
  • Experience with ASC 740 tax provision, federal and multi-state tax compliance, and tax controversy management
  • Experience managing banking relationships, credit facilities, and capital markets transactions
  • Prior experience building and leading high-performing teams; track record of developing talent
  • Knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SOX compliance, PCAOB audit standards, and SEC reporting requirements
  • Proficiency with Treasury Management Systems (TMS) and enterprise ERP platforms (SAP, Oracle, or similar)
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling; familiarity with tax compliance software (e.g., OneSource, Vertex, or similar)
  • Strong knowledge of retail point-of-sale cash management, bank reconciliation processes, and armored car/deposit operations
  • Working knowledge of derivatives, hedging instruments, and risk management strategies
  • Exceptional executive presence and ability to communicate complex financial matters to non-financial audiences, including Board members and senior leadership
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to connect treasury and tax strategy to broader corporate financial objectives
  • High integrity, sound judgment, and unwavering commitment to compliance and ethical standards
  • Collaborative leadership style with demonstrated ability to influence across functions and levels of the organization

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Finance, Accounting or Taxation strongly preferred
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and/or CTP (Certified Treasury Professional) designation preferred
  • Multi-state retail industry experience strongly preferred; manufacturing and distribution exposure is a significant plus

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute treasury strategy aligned with overall corporate financial goals, including capital allocation, debt management, and liquidity optimization.
  • Manage all banking relationships, including the company’s credit facilities, revolving lines of credit, and term debt arrangements.
  • Oversee cash positioning, short-term investments, and cash flow forecasting across the enterprise — including 950 retail locations, distribution centers, and manufacturing facilities.
  • Lead debt capital markets activities, including refinancing, new issuances, and covenant compliance for all public and private debt obligations.
  • Coordinate with investment banks, credit rating agencies, and lenders; maintain and enhance the company’s credit profile.
  • Manage interest rate risk through appropriate hedging strategies and instruments.
  • Maintain and continuously enhance treasury management systems (TMS) and banking technology platforms.
  • Oversee the full cash collection cycle, including point-of-sale cash management, armored car and deposit processes, and reconciliation across all retail store locations.
  • Design and enforce policies and controls for cash handling at the store level, in partnership with Retail Operations and Internal Audit.
  • Optimize working capital — including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and inventory financing — to maximize free cash flow.
  • Lead daily and weekly cash positioning and reporting; ensure accurate and timely cash flow forecasting for financial planning processes.
  • Monitor and improve lockbox, ACH, wire transfer, and card processing operations for efficiency and fraud prevention.
  • Oversee vendor payment terms and supply chain finance programs to improve working capital metrics.
  • Provide strategic oversight of all federal, state, and local income tax planning, compliance, and reporting for a multi-state public company operating in 39 states.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and filing of all federal, state, and local tax returns, including income, sales and use, payroll, property, and excise taxes.
  • Lead tax provision preparation under ASC 740, including uncertain tax positions, deferred tax analysis, and effective tax rate management in coordination with external auditors.
  • Drive tax planning strategies to minimize the effective tax rate while maintaining full compliance; advise management on structuring of transactions, acquisitions, and dispositions.
  • Manage all federal and state income tax audits, controversies, and appeals; develop strategies to resolve disputes with taxing authorities.
  • Oversee sales and use tax compliance across all retail store operations and e-commerce activity, including nexus analysis and exemption certificate management.
  • Manage property tax obligations across all real estate locations, including stores, distribution centers, and manufacturing plants.
  • Advise on tax implications of manufacturing and supply chain activities, including transfer pricing considerations where applicable.
  • Stay current on changes in federal and state tax law and assess their impact on the organization; proactively communicate updates to the CFO and leadership team.
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors, Big Four accounting firms, and specialized tax counsel.
  • Support SEC reporting obligations related to treasury and tax matters, including disclosures in the 10-K, 10-Q, and proxy statement.
  • Partner with the CFO and external auditors on PCAOB audit requirements related to treasury and tax; maintain Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance across all areas of responsibility.
  • Present treasury and tax strategy, performance, and risk updates to the CFO, Audit Committee, and Board of Directors as required.
  • Participate in earnings call preparation by providing input on treasury and tax-related financial metrics and disclosures.
  • Build, lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of treasury, cash management, and tax professionals.
  • Establish clear goals, performance metrics, and development plans for direct and indirect reports.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and professional development within the department.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting, FP&A, Legal, IT, Operations, Real Estate, and Retail teams.
