About The Position

This role is for a leader in Nationwide's Property and Casualty team, focusing on driving underwriting strategy for a Fortune 100 company. The position requires expertise in Excess and Surplus/Specialty and Commercial Lines insurance and involves collaborating with leaders across business lines and home office teams to achieve financial goals, strategic vision, and build industry expertise. The leader will provide market-leading product line expertise to drive profitable performance through underwriting excellence by guiding multiple E&S/Specialty and Commercial Lines functions in risk selection, appetite, guidelines, coverage, and pricing for Property risks, including Catastrophe (CAT) exposures, Crime, and Inland Marine. The role will also focus on delivering best-in-class underwriting, pricing, processes, and governance across the Nationwide Excess and Surplus/Specialty and Commercial Lines value chains.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree required in Business, Finance, Insurance, Economics, Statistics, or related field.
  • 15+ years of Property line of business underwriting, including CAT; regulatory, analytics, rate/rule/and form filings and profitability management is preferred.
  • Experience in commercial lines, admitted and non-admitted, including shared and layered is also preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of Property, Inland Marine, and crime for both admitted and non-admitted underwriting, risk and regulatory environment.
  • Technical underwriting, product and insurance carrier value chain expertise, advanced analytics, modeling and data fluency.
  • Expertly demonstrates a strategic mindset, organizational and interpersonal savvy, strong written and verbal communication skills, along with an ability to negotiate and influence others, and drive vision and purpose.
  • Exercises independent judgement and effectively makes sound business decisions.
  • Creatively resolves unique and challenging business problems.
  • Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
  • Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Responsibilities

  • Provide profit-driven thought leadership on market trends in data usage, pricing, coverage, and appetite for Nationwide E&S/Specialty and Commercial Lines organizations.
  • Acquire and leverage market intelligence to compare to peers and position designated products for competitive fit.
  • Establish and maintain Property portfolio best practices across Nationwide E&S/Specialty and Commercial Lines.
  • Lead underwriting process improvements, underwriting guideline enhancements, training, and referrals.
  • Assist with underwriting audits as needed by the Quality Team.
  • Work with the Reinsurance team to assist placement as needed.
  • Develop collaboration with Pricing Actuaries and ERM CAT team to ensure adequate pricing, control, and monitoring of geographic exposure distribution and peril risks.
  • Assist in accumulation management across all CAT exposures.
  • Lead associates on future of work skill development and education, team effectiveness, and development.
  • Participate in business reviews at portfolio, product, and key account levels.
  • Engage in execution of corrective action plans to achieve profitability targets.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
