VP of Engineering

Deliberate Solutions, Inc.New York, NY
$180,000 - $260,000Hybrid

About The Position

Deliberate AI is seeking a VP of Engineering to lead their engineering organization through a pivotal growth phase, transitioning from an early-stage team to a production-grade platform serving projects globally. The role involves managing a diverse team of engineers across various specializations, establishing engineering culture, delivery cadence, and technical standards to ensure reliable shipping under clinical and regulatory pressures. This position requires both hands-on technical expertise and organizational leadership to build and retain a high-performing team. The VP will make significant architectural decisions, particularly at system intersections, but their primary impact will be in building a strong engineering organization through strategic hiring, obstacle removal, process definition, and fostering a culture aligned with company values. The role emphasizes the effective use of AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity while maintaining the reliability required for clinical software.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience.
  • 4+ years leading engineering teams (managing managers or tech leads).
  • Proven track record building and scaling engineering teams from 2-5 to 20+ engineers in a high-growth environment.
  • Strong technical foundation across full-stack development, cloud infrastructure, and data systems.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures (GCP / AWS), including containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish engineering processes (planning, delivery, incident response, on-call) without over-bureaucratizing a small team.
  • Experience shipping production systems under regulatory or compliance constraints (HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similar).
  • Strong hiring and talent development skills, including building interview processes and coaching engineers.
  • Proficiency with agentic programming tools and AI-assisted development workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to translate engineering status and tradeoffs for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Healthcare or life sciences experience (HIPAA-compliant systems, clinical trial software, medical device software, regulated health tech products).
  • Experience with ML/AI product engineering (building infrastructure and integrations for production models).
  • Background in mobile application development or IoT/wearable data systems.
  • Experience managing engineering in a hybrid team across time zones.
  • Familiarity with clinical trial operations, research protocols, or GCP.
  • Experience with government-funded R&D (NIH, ARPA-H, DoD, NSF).
  • Understanding of audio/video processing pipelines, NLP, or affective computing at an architectural level.
  • Publications, conference presentations, or meaningful open-source contributions.
  • MBA, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Own engineering delivery across all product lines, including conversational GenAI assessment agents, passive sensing applications, clinician-facing monitoring dashboards, adaptive intervention systems, and underlying data/infrastructure layers.
  • Directly manage Lead Engineers (Full Stack, Audio-Visual Data, Wearables/Mobile Data, Platform) and technical advisors/contractors, fostering a culture of technical excellence, psychological safety, and high accountability.
  • Lead engineering recruiting in partnership with the CEO, defining roles, managing interview processes, calibrating offers, and designing onboarding to grow the team to 10+ engineers within 18 months.
  • Establish engineering planning processes (sprint cadence, milestone tracking, release management) aligned with project timelines, ensuring on-time delivery or proactive planning for delays.
  • Partner with Lead Engineers on cross-cutting architectural decisions, including service boundaries, shared infrastructure, deployment strategy (cloud, on-prem), data architecture, and security posture.
  • Guide the modernization of infrastructure, backend, frontend, mobile, and data pipelines from legacy platforms to production-grade clinical deployment infrastructure.
  • Ensure engineering supports multi-site, multi-continent deployments with the necessary reliability, monitoring, and incident response for clinical work.
  • Direct Security, Privacy, and Quality Officers to maintain HIPAA and GDPR compliance, implement security best practices, and ensure engineering processes meet regulatory requirements (21 CFR Part 11, GCP, etc.).
  • Collaborate with Product Leads on roadmap prioritization, the CEO on strategy and resourcing, and research scientists on ML integration and validation.
  • Foster an environment of agentic programming, continuous learning, direct feedback, and technical craftsmanship, balancing engineering focus with responsiveness to clinical and business needs.

Benefits

  • Base Salary: $180,000 - $260,000
  • Equity/stock options with milestone-based vesting
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Flexible PTO policy
  • Professional development budget for conferences and training
  • Authorship opportunities on publications describing platform and engineering innovations
  • Conference speaking opportunities
