About The Position

The Vice President of Ambulatory Services is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational integration, and oversight of physician practice administrative functions and ASC functions across the Arizona Market. This role ensures physician practice strategy, operations, and administrative functions align with organizational priorities, financial stewardship, regulatory requirements, and standards for patient safety, quality, and operational excellence. This executive leads the clinic network, ambulatory surgical operations, and patient access infrastructure as a single, integrated operating platform and serves as the primary administrative liaison between the physician group, APP group, and clinic staff across the AZ HOPCo market.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, nursing, or a related field required.
Minimum of ten years of progressive healthcare operations leadership experience, including at least five years at the director level or above.
Ambulatory surgery center leadership experience, including block management and anesthesia coordination.
Musculoskeletal, orthopaedic, or surgical specialty operating experience.
Experience in a private equity-backed or physician-aligned organization.
Experience integrating ancillary service lines such as imaging, physical therapy, or vascular programs into an ambulatory platform.
Demonstrated experience leading multi-site ambulatory or physician practice operations with full P&L accountability.
Proven track record of leading through subordinate leaders in a multi-layer reporting structure.
Direct experience partnering with APP’s physicians and surgeons in a performance-accountable operating environment.
Demonstrated results in growth, access improvement, cost management, or margin expansion, supported by specific and verifiable outcomes.
Working command of ambulatory financial statements, productivity benchmarks, payer and case mix dynamics, and operational analytics.
Familiarity with regulatory and accreditation standards applicable to ancillary services (e.g., ACR, Joint Commission, OSHA, IAC, DNV).
Strong financial acumen, including budget development and capital planning.
Effective vendor and contrator managment skills
Strong presentation and executive communication skills
Ability to lead cross-functional teams across multiple service lines and sites.
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, multi-site environment.
Ability to influence and build consensus among physician, clinical, and administrative stakeholders.
Primarily office-based with regular travel to clinical, ancillary, and construction sites.
May involve exposure to active construction environments; standard safety precautions apply.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, including site walk-throughs.
Ability to concentrate and manage multiple, simultaneous priorities under deadline pressure.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the CEO of AZ Market, lead the execution of strategic and operational plan for physician and advanced practice provider (APP) services that support organizational priorities, growth initiatives, and clinical excellence across the system of care in Arizona.
Partner with physician leadership to support implementation of clinical policies, operational standards, and evidence-based practices that promote consistent, high-quality care delivery across the system of care within the ambulatory footprint.
Advise executive leadership regarding healthcare trends, physician practice strategy, operational risks, reimbursement changes, and legislative or regulatory developments impacting ambulatory and physician practice operations.
Ensure effective allocation of financial resources to support physician practice growth, clinical excellence, patient access, provider productivity, and operational efficiency.
Provide leadership and oversight to physician practice administrative teams, including administrative leaders and providers supporting the organization's overall operations.
Lead operational improvement initiatives focused on physician practice efficiency, patient access, workflow optimization, throughput, and financial performance across the system of care.
In collaboration with research administration, oversee administrative coordination related to academic, research, and compensation activities involving physicians and APPs.
Lead administrative coordination and operational support related to physician agreements, external contracts, and vendor partnerships in collaboration with the Office of the General Counsel.
Partner on physician and APP recruitment, onboarding, retention, and workforce planning initiatives with physicians and Sr. Director of Provider Recruitment and Network Growth.
Regularly engage with the Senior Leadership Team (ELT) of AZ Market to provide strategic updates regarding physician practice performance, operational risks, growth opportunities, industry trends.
Develop and maintain strategic relationships with physician leaders, academic partners, alliance stakeholders, and relevant professional organizations to advance operational excellence and physician practice initiatives.
Prepare executive-level reports, dashboards, analyses, and strategic updates for executive leadership and governing bodies regarding physician practice performance and initiatives.
Own the ambulatory P&L. Deliver budgeted volume, revenue, and contribution margin across the clinic network and ambulatory surgical operations, with accountability at the regional and sire level.
Manage case mix and payer mix. Partner with physician leadership and revenue cycle to understand mix drivers, protect margin on high-value service lines and address unfavorable trends before they compound.
Control labor cost. Establish productivity standards by site and role, manage worked hours per encounter and per case, and eliminate structural reliance on overtime, premium pay, and agency staffing.
Oversee supply chain cost per case with outpatient centres through standardization, vendor compliance, and physician-partnered utilization review.
Explain variance credibly. Present monthly operating results to the Market CEO with a defensible account of driver-level variance and a corresponding corrective plan.
Build and maintain a defensible view of ambulatory volume leaving the network by service line, referral source, geography, and payer.
Close the gap. Design and execute conversion strategies that support our ancillary services in coordination with the VP of Ancillary Services.
Own referral operations. Ensure referral intake, triage, and scheduling processes convert demand rather than dissipate it; eliminate friction that drives patients out of network.
Support service line expansion. Provide operational readiness for new sites, new providers, and expanded outpatient service offerings, including vascular and interventional programs.
Partner on provider onboarding. Work with Provider Recruitment and Operations to ensure new providers reach productive volume within defined ramp expectations.
Standardize the operating model. Establish consistent workflows, staffing models, hours of operation, and performance standards across all clinic sites while accommodating legitimate specialty variation.
Govern templates and schedules. Own provider template governance, appointment supply, and utilization of available capacity; hold sites accountable for template integrity.
Improve access. Reduce new patient lead time and third next available appointment metrics; expand effective capacity without proportional cost increase.
Address capacity constraints. Partner with the VP of Ancillary Services on imaging capacity limitations that constrain clinic throughput and downstream conversion.
Manage facilities and readiness. Ensure sites are operationally sound, appropriately equipped, compliant, and prepared for volume growth.
Drive block utilization. Implement block allocation, release, and reallocation governance at Elevation Surgery Centre with transparent reporting to physician stakeholders.
Stabilize anesthesia coverage. Own the operational relationship with anesthesia partners, ensuring coverage reliability, schedule alignment, and resolution of recurring service constraints.
Protect schedule integrity. Improve first case on-time starts, reduce same-day cancellations and turnover time, and eliminate avoidable schedule disruption.
Optimize case mix. Work with surgeons and the market leadership team to align case selection, site-of-service decisions, and acuity mix with facility capability and economics.
Operate as a credible physician partner. Establish trusted working relationships with surgeons and physician leaders and APPs grounded in responsiveness, data transparency, and consistent follow-through.
Align incentives. Partner with the AZ Market CEO, AZ Market Physician President, Finance, and Human Resources to support physician and APP compensation strategy, incentive plan administration, and market competitiveness, using accurate operational data and sound business framing.
Promote physician and APP engagement in quality improvement, patient safety, patient experience, and operational excellence initiatives.
Own regulatory readiness. Ensure all ambulatory sites and the surgery centre maintain continuous compliance with accreditation, licensure, CMS, OSHA, and applicable state requirements.
Manage clinical risk operationally. Partner with clinical leadership on event reporting, root cause analysis, and closure of identified corrective actions.
Develop capital requests. Author completes ambulatory capital business cases with quantified financial return, operational justification, and risk assessment.
Integrate across the market. Coordinate with the specialty hospital, ancillary services, and enterprise shared services to ensure the ambulatory platform functions as part of an integrated delivery system.
Support enterprise initiatives. Represent the Arizona ambulatory platform in corporate and multi-market initiatives, standard work adoption, and system implementations.
