About The Position

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is a transformational leader who creates organizational coherence at our academic health center by directing nursing activities at Fairview University Hospitals, East and West Banks (including the Children's Hospital). This position is responsible for leading and inspiring teams to consistently provide/accomplish exceptional clinical care, exceptional patient and family experience, efficient use of resources, strategic growth and nation-leading research, innovation, evidence-based practice and education across the continuum. The CNO has ultimate responsibility for meeting patient needs and is responsible for integrating the planning, organizing, and directing of patient care for the medical center. The CNO will partner in the development and lead implementation of clinical nursing practice model that reflects and drives best practices in academic health environments and creates an environment to facilitate team actions that produce results. The CNO will work closely in a triad relationship with the VPMA, VP of Operations, and with other inter-professional team leaders. The CNO will establish strong relationships with nursing leaders and educators from University of Minnesota Academic Health Center to ensure ongoing advancement of professional nursing practices and continuous (ongoing) improvement in clinical outcomes throughout the organization. In addition, this role will partner with the CNE for the system, Chief Nursing Officers and Specialty Services leaders from across Fairview to enable consistent practices, standards, evaluation and adherence to common standards of competency of nursing care across all hospitals and medical centers.

Requirements

M.A./M.S. If Master's degree is not in Nursing, the individual must have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing
CNO or ACNO experience
7 to 10 years of progressive managerial experience in patient care; leading patient care in a complex academic health system or medical center with proven track record as a nursing director/executive whose organization delivers excellent patient care within a major health system, subsidiary or operating unit
Registered Nurse Current MN Nursing License within 90 Days

Responsibilities

Responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the delivery of nursing services.
Provide senior leadership and assume ultimate responsibility for meeting patient needs in accordance with the mission, vision, and strategic plan.
Provide(s) strategic leadership in the design and deployment of solutions that advance clinical practice and improve patient outcomes;
Participate with leaders from administrative staff, medical staff, and other stakeholders to develop the strategic initiatives, budget, resource plans, and policies and procedures in support of patient and family centered care.
Partner with specialty services executives to identify the need for human, material and capital resources related to nursing and patient care and develop plans for assuring their availability.
Organize and direct patient care services to ensure provision of high quality, cost effective care to patients and optimal utilization of resources.
Assures that care is seamlessly coordinated across the continuum of care, from registration and admission through transitions of care with specialty services executives.
Guide development and implementation of new patient care programs and services to enhance competitive strength and increase market share.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations that affect patient care and the licensure of nursing and other patient care staff.
Develop, implement and maintain functional and operating policies and procedures that support entity goals and objectives, meet Joint Commission and CMS standards and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Establishes, through engagement of nurses, the structures, processes, environment and compliance to enable the organization to achieve national recognition.
Participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of an effective quality improvement program.
Provide leadership in fostering an environment of professional collaboration, critical thinking, and innovation to enhance the achievement of organizational objectives.
Guide the planning and implementation of changes in operating systems and processes to ensure continual improvement in quality and effectiveness of patient care services.
Guide development and implementation of standards and systems for measuring quality of care and productivity to identify problems, facilitate decision making, and contribute to improvements in quality and productivity.
Continually assesses variability in nursing clinical practice and determines where standardization is warranted.
Implement standardized protocols and practices to improve patient outcomes, patient experience, and or create greater efficiency.
Leverage EHR and other technologies in support of efficient patient care.
Maintain professional affiliations and participate in community, industry and professional associations to represent entity and Fairview interests, foster good business relations with business partners, and keep abreast of developments in patient care and the healthcare industry.
Develop, foster, and maintain good working relationships with medical staff and medical directors as well as inter-professional team and community to promote quality of care, timely and effective resolution of patient care issues, and cost-effective utilization of resources.
Provide support and advice to the assigned Board and Medical Staff committees and leadership to assigned task forces to ensure effective governance and positive medical staff relations.
Partner with Medical Leadership to create and implement integrative therapy care delivery protocols and practices that are in alignment with the system practice model.
Assures strong linkages with nursing and provider colleagues within University of MN Physicians and the Schools of Nursing, along with other health sciences division, partnering on program development and organizational priorities which will establish the academic health center as preeminent nationally.
Ensure a working environment with solid structures and processes that enables employees, direct reports, and colleagues within Fairview to perform duties to the best of their abilities and at the top of their license.
Collaborate with Human Resources and other staff to oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of recruitment, retention and professional development programs.
Develop and maintain a healthy labor relations climate to foster high employee morale, motivation, and productivity.
Encourage innovation, enable best practices and create an environment of excellence.
Generate an environment supportive of learning and inquiry for employees and students in health care.
Build, foster and maintain a strong and cohesive leadership team.

Provide knowledge and leadership to ensure collaboration and alignment between the hospital(s) and medical staff.
Partner with Labor Relations in managing improvements and collective bargaining agreements.

Serves on committees or as an advisor regarding strategic and academic program planning within health science schools.
