About The Position

The VP, Data Governance Steward serves as a data governance lead and recognized subject matter expert for one or more assigned enterprise data domains, independently leading governance activities for enterprise data assets, Key Data Elements, metadata, data quality, and data risk. This role provides governance oversight and challenge, assesses adherence to enterprise data standards, identifies and escalates material data risks, and influences sustainable remediation and control enhancements across business, operations, and technology stakeholders. The position leads cross-functional governance initiatives, facilitates senior stakeholder decisions, and advises business and technology partners on governance requirements for significant projects, system changes, and critical reporting processes. This position requires advanced data governance expertise, strong business judgment, and the ability to communicate complex risks and recommendations effectively to senior audiences. Performs all duties in accordance with the Company’s policies and procedures, all U.S. state and federal laws and regulations, wherein the Company operates.

Requirements

• Minimum of eight years of experience in data governance, data management, data risk management, data quality, regulatory reporting, or a related discipline.
• Advanced knowledge of financial services and banking operations, products, risk management, internal controls, and regulatory expectations relevant to enterprise data.
• Demonstrated subject matter expertise in data governance frameworks, Key Data Element governance, data quality management, metadata management, issue management, and data controls.
• Experience independently leading complex, cross-functional data governance initiatives and driving decisions among stakeholders with competing priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to identify, assess, communicate, and appropriately escalate material data risks, control deficiencies, and governance exceptions.
• Experience advising and influencing senior management through clear analysis, business judgment, and risk-based recommendations.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, root cause analysis, and decision-making skills, including the ability to decompose complex issues and determine when escalation is required.
• Experience evaluating data processes, systems, controls, datasets, testing evidence, and remediation plans against established governance requirements.
• Strong facilitation, presentation, written communication, and relationship-building skills across business, operations, technology, risk, audit, and compliance stakeholders.
• Ability to communicate difficult strategies, risks, and concepts in a relatable manner to persuade, influence, and drive timely decisions.
• Ability to operate independently with limited supervision, exercise sound judgment, manage multiple priorities, and maintain accountability for outcomes.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor others and contribute to the continuous enhancement of enterprise data governance capabilities.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree in MIS, Information Management, Data Management, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field and/or professional certification in data governance or data management, such as CDMP, DGSP, or similar, preferred.
• Experience working in a large financial institution with complex data environments and multiple systems of record preferred.
• Experience supporting regulatory examinations, internal audits, issue remediation, or control enhancement initiatives preferred.
• Experience developing or implementing enterprise data governance standards, procedures, operating models, metrics, or control frameworks preferred.
• Experience with Microsoft Purview or comparable data governance and metadata management technologies preferred.
• Demonstrated relationship building and influence with senior and executive stakeholders preferred.
• SQL query proficiency and experience analyzing data across complex datasets preferred.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a data governance lead and subject matter expert for one or more assigned enterprise data domains, providing independent advice and challenge to business, operations, technology, and risk stakeholders.
• Lead governance activities for Key Data Elements, including identification, tiering, definitions, classifications, business rules, metadata, ownership, and approval of material changes.
• Establish and maintain relationships with senior stakeholders across business, operations, technology, and risk to drive timely decisions and sustainable data governance outcomes.
• Evaluate and challenge process, control, system, and dataset adherence to enterprise data governance requirements and Key Data Element standards for assigned data domains.
• Lead monitoring and analysis of data quality and data control outcomes to identify emerging trends, control weaknesses, and potential data risks.
• Identify, assess, document, and appropriately escalate material data risks, governance exceptions, and control deficiencies to senior leadership and governance forums.
• Lead or oversee root cause analysis and challenge remediation plans to promote the timely, sustainable resolution of data-related issues.
• Provide governance oversight and challenge for front-end accuracy validation and other data validation activities involving Key Data Elements in assigned domains, where applicable.
• Advise business and technology teams on data governance requirements and best practices for significant initiatives, system implementations, data migrations, mass changes, and other changes affecting critical data.
• Represent assigned data domains in enterprise governance forums, committees, and regulatory or audit-related discussions, as appropriate.
• Develop and enhance data governance standards, procedures, controls, metrics, and operating practices based on identified risks, regulatory expectations, and enterprise priorities.
• Mentor junior data stewards, analysts, and business stakeholders in data governance, metadata, data quality, issue management, and control practices.
• Participate in interviewing and hiring decisions.
• Prepare and deliver employee performance evaluations, goal planning, and counseling.
• Manage, support, coach, and train employees.
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
