About The Position

The YI Texas office is looking for a Voter Engagement Fellow to join our team. This is a paid fellowship lasting 4 months. Current college students and people participating in work-based learning programs are encouraged to apply. Existing experience within YI’s young advocates' program and Youth Advisory board will be critical to the role's success. This position is based in Houston, Texas and will require travel in the Greater Houston area. This position pays $21/hour for 15-19 hours/week. The Voter Engagement Fellow must be available at least 6-8 consecutive hours any day Monday through Friday, 9 am- 5 pm CT, and the rest of the hours can be scheduled around the fellow’s availability. The fellow will assist the Houston YI full-time staff in executing the Houston Civic Engagement Network (C.E.N.), managing organizing events, assisting with deep canvassing and outreach, support the “Get Out the Vote” pledges, helping engage our current base of advocates, and assisting with various aspects related to Houston voter engagement. This position is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about nonprofits, civic engagement program management, community outreach, partnership development, managing volunteers, organizing, and outreach. No college degree is necessary to apply.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates initiative and ownership of their work
  • Ability to help manage projects by setting deadlines, flagging potential issues, and creatively problem-solving with the Regional Director and YI staff
  • Ability to work effectively independently and with a team
  • Lived experience with YI’s issue areas (ex., experience with lack of access to healthcare, high tuition cost or student debt, etc.)
  • Creative, energetic, and possessing a great attitude
  • Professional and mature in all settings
  • Experience and comfort working with diverse communities
  • Excellent communication skills: can communicate effectively with their supervisor(s) as well as young adults and external partners
  • Experience with YI’s young adult engagement programs
  • A passion for Young Invincibles’ mission.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit participants for turnout during voter engagement trainings and events
  • Manage follow-up and continued relationships with young adults who join our Houston Civic Engagement Network
  • Mobilize young adults to take action on our advocacy and voter engagement campaigns
  • Help collect 450 Get Out the Vote pledges from young adults in the Houston community
  • Ensure base of volunteers completes accountability trackers and enter NGP VAN data in a timely manner and share ongoing updates with the TX team
  • Support with developing digital video content for sharing voter engagement resources, trainings, and events
  • Assist in the development of voter engagement resources and building voter engagement partnership throughout Houston (and Texas)
  • Complete check-ins with volunteers weekly by email or phone to ensure progress on voter engagement efforts
  • Help ensure all canvasser complete deep canvassing trainings within a timely manner
  • Ensure all required paperwork is completed (contracts, W-9s, media forms) and collected from canvassers, plus ensure all stipends awarded as scheduled
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Help coordinate volunteer canvassing dates and ensure they are meeting internal deadlines
