About The Position

This position is full-time, seasonal starting February and ending in November. The Volunteer Programs Crew Lead works closely with the Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Volunteerism and Service Learning (VSL), and Education and Outreach (E&O) work groups, as well as the citywide Volunteer Cooperative team. This position helps to safely and effectively recruit, train, coordinate, recognize, and retain volunteers who are in on-going roles and assignments that support OSMP strategic programs and projects such as wildlife monitors, restoration stewards, visitor ambassadors, trail ambassadors, naturalists, and staff assistant volunteers. This position is responsible for field and project management, team coordination, staff and volunteer communications, skills development, public speaking, public communications, and administrative and logistical support. This role leads and supports volunteers who work to advance community connection, education and inclusion as part of the OSMP Master Plan.

Ability to work evenings and weekends.
Ability to inventory supplies and help order supplies to meet daily functions of program.
Skill and ability to manage a volunteer database including setting up operations and reporting functions with in it, pulling relevant data, troubleshooting, interpreting data, and assisting volunteers and other staff in the database use.
Skill to handle various administrative tasks on a daily basis to include answering phone calls, replying to emails, assisting volunteers with requests, communicating with staff that volunteers work alongside.
Skill, interest and ability to work with volunteers.
Skill in written and oral communication.
Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
Valid driver's license and ability to maintain acceptable motor vehicle record.
Associate degree in natural sciences, resource management, education, public lands, or a similar field.
Four (4) years of related experience may substitute for the education requirement only.
Two (2) or more years of experience in a combination of: customer service or public communications, public speaking, and/or coordinating volunteers or events.
Must have or be able to obtain valid current First Aid and CPR/AED certifications within first 3 months of employment.

Knowledge and familiarity with project management variables including time, resources, requirements, and responding to unexpected events.
Knowledge of learning strategies by selecting and using teaching methods appropriate for a situation when learning or teaching new things.
Skill in and prior experience leading, supervising or supporting volunteers in public contact roles or natural resource management related roles.
Bachelor’s Degree in natural sciences, resource management, education, public lands, or similar field.

Responsibilities

Recruiting, Training, Coordinating, Supervising and Evaluating Volunteers
Leads and coordinates volunteers to ensure opportunities for public involvement to fulfill department vision, mission, and initiatives.
Hosts outreach and recruitment strategies and events (virtual and in-person) to promote OSMP and city-wide volunteer opportunities.
Creates volunteer job descriptions and applications to screen and select volunteers.
Provides field support, training, and performance feedback to volunteers.
Facilitates both online and in-person trainings and team development activities for volunteers and staff who support volunteers.
Responds to internal and external customers in a timely and reliable manner.
Motivates, develops, and directs volunteers as they work, identifying the best volunteer candidates for the role.
Works effectively as a member and leader of formal and informal teams by understanding the interests and concerns of others, demonstrating a willingness to share and receive information and feedback, and acting on it accordingly.
Openly shares successes and challenges to enhance the OSMP Volunteer programs.
Instructs and mentors volunteers, demonstrating commitment to mentoring others, answering questions, and providing a safe space to learn.
Identifies what needs to be done and doing it before being asked or before the situation requires it.
Completes work in a timely and consistent manner.
Coordinates equipment, materials, and uniforms for volunteers.
Works with staff to recognize and celebrate volunteer impact.
Interacts with the public to increase awareness of park rules and regulations and acts as a community advocate; communicates with diverse community members and represents the department at various public events.
Program and Database Management
Maintains a city-wide database to organize 2,500+ OSMP volunteers and keeps accurate records of all data.
Trains staff and volunteers on the Give Pulse volunteer database and time entry system and/or other volunteer management systems as needed.
Reporting and Communication
Records and communicates volunteer impact for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
Prepares presentations for staff, volunteers and advisory boards as necessary.
Works closely with staff from 8 to 10 other OSMP and city departments through meetings, Microsoft Teams, calls and emails.
Presents volunteer data to a variety of groups including internal and external colleagues.
Speaks and writes to communicate ideas clearly, actively listens and demonstrates an openness to new ideas.
Builds collaborative relationships and works as a member of the team.
Develops, maintains, and strengthens partnerships with others inside and outside the organization.
Provides information, assistance, and support to others.
