About The Position

Are you an innovative and versatile leader who is ready to serve the community and have an impact on animal welfare? The Volunteer Manager oversees the recruitment and retention of volunteers to support all areas of operations for Maricopa County’s Animal Care and Control Department, from intake to finding dogs new homes. We will look to you to drive positive change by leading volunteers, removing barriers, and ensuring best practices are in place. You will collaborate with teams across all shelters to ensure consistency and achieve the optimal outcome for each animal, given the available resources. Requirements

  • Three years of management or supervisor experience in an animal welfare or animal control organization
  • Demonstrated professional experience managing volunteers
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
  • Successful candidates must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire.

  • Extensive project management or logistics experience

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing and refining the volunteer program for Animal Care & Control
  • Recommend improvements and initiatives to the Animal Welfare Officer, and lead the implementation process
  • Meets with division managers to determine volunteer needs, coordinate assignments, and address problems
  • Develops and administers a volunteer recognition program
  • Provides the Animal Welfare Officer with timely, accurate operational reports and demonstrates exceptional organizational skills
  • Assists as needed with off-site events related to either the recruitment of volunteers or the use of volunteers in large numbers
  • Visit off-site locations to recruit volunteers and work to develop corporate volunteer opportunities
  • Updates the volunteer database and generates reports detailing volunteer activities
  • Assists animal welfare organizations with training and represents the Department at community functions and special events, including special projects as assigned
